375R/Howa
« on: December 01, 2010, 03:49:48 AM »
I would like to hear from those who have tried the cartridge (375 Ruger). It looks very effiecient from the loading data I have read. I am not filling a "need", but with the Howa at $550.00 retail I am tempted. What say you?

Some good info:      http://www.realguns.com/archives/144.htm

I am not familiar with the Howa, but the 375 Ruger is a very good cartridge in my opinion.  Mine is in a Ruger Alaskan.  Working up loads was pretty easy as everything I threw at it seemed to shoot good.  I got a good deal on some old boxes of Hornady 270 gr Sp at a gun show so that is what I settled on for my hunting loads.  I shoot the 270's over Reloader 15, I am getting 2600 out of a 20" barrel and extremely good accuracy.  They could be pushed faster but I don't need them any faster.  You should get one so you can see first hand how awesome it is when an animal is hit with that big bullet at that speed ;D

I just recently built one on a Model 70 classic...there is definately some power there. It's a great cartridge in my opinion. Just remember to get your Howa chambered for a magnum so the bolt face will be correct and all you'll have to do is hang a new barrel.

Good cartridge (from what I've heard and seen) and good rifle. I had a Howa in 270Win many years ago. Only needed to bed it, but most rifles will need some bedding attention. Howa make the Vanguard for Weatherby ie it is the same rifle.

I didn't realize that Howa was chambering for .375 Ruger. Are others besides Ruger and Howa as well?

I have a Leupold VX-3 1,5-5x20 on medium high Leupold PRW rings and EGW one piece rail. I haven't fired the rifle yet but there's no reason to doubt the scope's suitability for moose and the rifle, is there? One piece rail allows for easier scope placement. Are there any one piece steel rails available for Howa?

Steyr-Mannlicher chambers for .375 Ruger. However, their first attempt at this caliber had a shortish chamber leade (? throat?) and couldn't take advantage of the full potential of the cartridge. This problem should absolutely be checked before buying one.

You guys are on the same thought process as I was when it came to scopes.  My Ruger wears a Vari-XIII 1.5-5x20.  Great up close scope but still enough magnifacation for the further shots.  I used mine, with 270 gr Hornady handloads, to take a little bull elk at 376 yds.  No problems.

Nice shot, bigswede! (Care to share your muzzle velocity? edit: sorry, should have read the whole thread again before asking...)
