Orders for Ft. Sill
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:31:45 AM »
Next June, I will be moving to Ft. Sill and I enjoy shooting and hunting. What should I expect to be able to hunt and are there any imposed limitations, i.e. shotgun only areas, etc?

Thanks, Dinny

Ft. Sill Hmmm
You do know that when the world gets an enema that's where it goes in don't ya? ;D
Just kidding I grew up at Ft. Sill and in the Lawton area although the place was a whole nother animal back then.
Our state has a little something for just about any hunter. I don't know why we don't have ODWC web site as a sticky, but here it is.

There is great hunting from what I understand on the base. With its people elgible to hunt but I don't know the requirements. The land around there is pretty much locked in on leases. You have elk hunting in that part of the state and on the base. It's definitely not Mizzu type of country though. I have hunted the wildlife refuge and it's more dry and hilly than eastern OK.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Welcome to Oklahoma & thank you for your service.  Lots of hunting & fishing opportunties in the Ft Sill area.  You'll be real close to some really good dove hunting & SW OK has always had good quail populations.  If you're not a wing shooter you may want to take up another habit.  lots of waterfowl & wild turkey hunting too.

There is a controlled elk hunt but its tough to get drawn into.  Enjoy your stay in our state.

Thanks for your appreciation! I love to hunt and this sums it all up. If it flies, it dies. If it's brown, it's down. I'm ready for whatever SW Oklahoma has to offer.

I grew up near Ft Sill (within earshot of artillery drills) and you"ll find it a nice area.

One note of caution, Lawton is a hotbed for gang activity.  You won't have any issues on post but some areas of Lawton are best to avoid after dark-much like many cities, I'm sure.  I only mention that in case you are bringing a family.

I am bringing a family and find this to be valuable information. I have a friend there already who is scouting neighborhoods for me. My understanding is that I want to live East of Lawton proper if not in a smaller town like Elgin, Fletcher or Duncan.

Thanks, Dinny

Marlow & Duncan are both nice places if you don't mind a 45 minute or more commute. I was born in Marlow and graduated high school in Duncan.   Both have better schools than some other small towns around the area and are known as good places to raise families.
East side of Lawton is good but there are some nice additions on NW side of city.   East side has Lawton MacArthur high school.  A good one.

Geronimo, Chattanooga, and Indiahoma are some other towns you might want to look at.  Geronimo has a brand new school complex, supposed to be tornado proof.  I graduated from Geronimo back a 100 or so years ago.  I have no idea of the housing market in these towns, haven't been to any of them in years.

Dinny,

I don't live down there but I have a bunch of friends who do.
Generall concensus is any of the small towns around Lawton are fine places to live.
There are some areas with problems in Lawton, but it sounds like you're getting good advice there.

Also if any of your kids are in scouting let me know and I'll get you a contact.

Between the great advice here and from other soldiers at Ft Sill, I have a real good idea of where I would prefer to live. I'm told anthing West of 52nd St and East of I-44. The small towns are preferred even more. I have a few prospects in Duncan and Cache.

My daughter is still quite young, only 19 m/o, I would still like contact info for local scouting organizations. I hope to teach first-aid skills to the scouts when I get there.

Thanks, Dinny

I guess a lot has changed there,I lived on nw 50th st when I was there 89-90 I thought the whole area was pretty good minus some area's. I did'nt have time for hunting due to constant maneuvers, made a few good friends there as well. They even took to me being from ny but I'm from upstate not the outhouse below me.

After about 15 hours of driving I finally arrived here last night. I'm temporarily staying in a cabin at Medicine Park. All I say right now is , Wow! It is hotter than Hades here...... still 85 degrees at 1030pm.

Pharmboy,
It'll be a few weeks before I make it over there, but I will stop-by. Top priority right now is finding a suitable house to live in. I looked at several today in Lawton and I'm not impressed with what I saw. We're gonna look in some of the smaller towns nearby this weekend. Hopefully the tide turns for us. I can't imagine we'll find houses that are much worse... ::)

Thanks, Dinny

That's SW Okla Dinny.
I was born in the little town west of there (Altus on the AFB) where it really gets hot. ;D
I think Ms. Greybeard (Faye) is from down in that neck of the woods maybe.
Medicine Park is a neat little town. I keep expecting it to turn into some kind of little artist community.
Lot's of flavor in the Architecture there.

Sometime in the past, someone on here made an offer to trade some hog hunting for prairie dog hunting. I have found just the place. In the yard of the Lawton Army Reserve Center and next to them in the Boy Scout Center. There must be a hundred of those PDs out there in the yard everyday when I drive by. I plan to stop-in and ask if they can be shot with a bow. It's unlikely that they can be shot with a firearm inside city limits... If they do allow it, you can find me there under a nice shade tree taking aim at a nearby mound. They gotta come out sooner or later!

Thanks, Dinny

BTW, looks like I will be living on the east side of Lawton near the Park Lane Elementary school. Good thing is that there's a few ponds open for fishing within a short walk from the house.

I don't think the City of Lawton would be to happy with you shooting p-dogs in town. ;D
Those p-dogs spread to that area from Elmer Thomas park  they sometimes invade Lawton High's stadium.
The parks dept use to use firetrucks to flood their holes and drowned them when I was kid.
The bunny huggers put an end to that now I think they are relocating them.
