Need advice on scope base mounts
« on: December 02, 2010, 02:56:31 AM »
Hello.I need some advice on mounting a scope base to a Marlin 30aw.I bought a new Nitrex 3x9x42,Weaver Grand Slam Dovetail rings, and a weaver grand slam dovetail base with adjustable windage. On the top of my receiver I have 4 screws in which to mount this base. But the base only allows 3 screws.I mounted the base where all 3 screws were to be used. But upon shouldering the scope,I found I had to lean quite a bit forward to see all the picture. So I reassembled rearward.Great when shouldering, but now only 2 of my base holes can be used. Will 2 screws be enuff or do I need to look for another base and rings. Also I got the low bases which I thought would work on this scope.Thought Id read somewhere the low rings were good to 44mm.But the packaging says 40mm.In order to work I had to remove my rear sight elevator(I think thats what its called). So now my factory rear sight is sitting flat to the barrel.Should I just go ahead and order medium rings so I can reassemble my rear iron sight.I know this is a long post, but Im needing some opinions more knowledgable than my own.(BTW I bought this gun for 200.00and Ive got about 140.00'ish in scope, bases, and rings). This is my first Marlin 30/30,I have a 783 22 mag and love it.Hopefully I will like this Marlin as well as the 783.Thanks again.Scott.

I don't like the sound of only two screws!

The rings sound fine, I prefer a scope as lo as possible to the barrel.  Many of mine are identical.

I would double check the model numbers and be sure you have correct base for this application. Maybe even contact Weaver directly.

Good luck, CW

This chart will give you an idea of my height rings you need for your scope.

At a minimum you will need medium scope rings depending on your scope.  The diameter is the exterior measurement of the objective bell.  I recently bought a new set of rings, but before doing so I measure the objective bell of the scope with my calipers.  The set of calipers I have measurers in millimeters and inches.  Have to admit it was the first time.

This is the base I have been using for close to forty years on my 336.  Using this base I have had no issue with the rear sight.

I looked all over the Weaver WebPages and could not find adjustable bases, just rings.

I like the idea of adjustable rings.

Normally I am on the same page with cwlongshot but I have to disagree this time.  A scope with a 42MM Objective lens will require a medium high base on your Marlin when you add in the bell housing diameter to the lens.  You want a little clearance between the scope and the barrel, including the rear sight.  I do go for the lowest mount giving me the clearance.

I had to go to medium rings on my 336 when I installed a new scope on it.  The objective Bell was not the issue, but the large eye box on the scope.  I needed the clearance for the hammer.  Suggest you check that out.

As you can see the hammer just clears the eye box on my rifle.  The problem was when the hammer was cocked it would jam against the scope.  If you are mounting your scope way forward of that position, the scope should be 3-4 inches from the eye you are pushing the scope beyond the eye relief distance it is designed.
