Rebarrel 300 RUM???
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:20:51 AM »
Well I have to say that this is my first post in this forum and I shouldn't be in here!!! I have one of those personalities that, well lets just say it costs me lots of money...  Anyway I've been playing around with my 300 RUM and have run countless numbers of load configurations through it and am convinced that I don't have that great of a barrel on it.  I have shot several animals with it in the 300yd and a speed goat at 448 with it, but on paper it just doesn't make me happy. I just put a new thumbhole laminate stock with aluminum block on it and it makes it quite shootable, so since I already put some money into it I am considering rebarreling the bugger also. I have looked at several different makers (Shilen, E.R. Shaw, Douglas and Hart), if I go for it I am leaning toward the Shaw due to price and am considering their helical fluting.  My questions are is it worth my trouble rebarreling this gun? Is Shaw a solid barrel manufacturer?  Should I check out any other makers? I'm not going to be shooting competition, just like the idea of shooting to this guns potential.  Again, I am afraid to go down this road... ::)

I had a 28" Broughton 5c barrel put on my 300 RUM. It easily prints groups less than an inch at 200 yds. I also added a brake to deal with the recoil from heavy loads.

I would not put a custom barrel on any rifle that has not had the action trued. Once the action has been properly trued up than the B - B - B principal comes into play for providing accuracy. Bedding (which I assume that you've already taken care of), barrel (which you're contemplating), and bullets (as in, quality bullets that work well in your new barrel).

Presto - you've got and accurate rifle to enjoy

Buckskin:  Welcome to the forum, and as yer favorite Custom Rifle forum moderator I would be loath to suggest anything less than whatever you would like to do to further customize your rum but, and this is a fairly large one, you have already taken several animals at 300 yds and a goat in a speedo at 448 - what am I missing?

When you say 'countless numbers of load configurations' - how many rounds are we talking about here?  Is your barrel shot out (not with 300 and 450 yd shots it isn't)?  Coppered up maybe but geez, a 450 yd shot is pretty dang good even if it was.

I would be tempted to suggest - naw, I will suggest that before you drop lots of $ on new stuff that will have to go through a break-in period, like a new barrel, you consider bore lapping or fire lapping your barrel to see if that improves your groups on paper.  Drop on down to Veral Smiths forum and read what he has to say about bore lapping and if you like what you read then get a bore lapping kit from him, lap that barrel and then see how she shoots.  You may get a inexpensive fix to your concerns.  Hope this helps.

Yes, I know what your saying.  I feel kind of stupid saying that my barrel isn't where I wan't it to be when dropping a goat at 448yds. I will give the lapping a look.  Like I said I'm hesitant to start putting gobs of money into a gun, because I know it will never end...
