40x barrels all marked the same?
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:00:05 PM »
Does anybody know if all 40Xs have Ilion NY stamped in the barrel, I thought they did but noticed tonight my pop's 6mm just has 6mm remington stamped in it and a couple of machinist marks.  I never ran the serial but by history would guess it to have been manufactured in the 70s.

He bought it used a long time ago, so yes it is possible.  He didn't notice and probably wouldn't have.  I am just a curious person by nature so I wondered.

Hmmmm how does it shoot?

If it shoots fine then unless it's for collection and needs to be as per it left the factory I cannot see a problem  ;)

In the early 80's I ordered a Remington 40X in 30/338 Mag from Bob Pease. It took about 2 months for the rifle to arrive. It does not say anything on the barrel except the chambering, the letters JC after the chambering, and under the JC it has in small letters EG. No where does Ilion appear on the barrel. The rifle is still as it left Bob Pease.

Okay, so its possible thanks.  The rifle shoots like a 40x should, I was just being curious.  I like to look for used 40Xs and would like to know more about them when I look.

How does that work with the short action?  I've never used a mag in a 40x and wondered how much of an inconvenience it would be.

It's obviously a single shot. It's not a bother and I do hunt with it. Coyotes at 800 yds is a fun game. I generally practice at 880 measured yards with it so a coyote is not a small target for the rifle. I have a modified Leupold 6.5-20 Target scope on it. I don't even know if the guy I had do the mods on the scope is around anymore but it works. The only time the short action is an issue is when you unload a loaded round. You have to pull the bolt out. Otherwise, it's a fabulous rifle. I also have a 30/338 mag built on a Sako action with an Apex premium heavy sporter barrel. It's also a long range shooter. The Remmy likes the 190gr HPBT pills at 2700'ps and the Sako likes the 150gr CoreLoks at just under 3500'ps. I like the round and it's performed beyond my expectations. Both guns are too heavy to carry far but when I hunt it's usually less than 50 yds from the truck and start calling. Gotta love the South Texas senderos. But I don't feel handicapped hunting with it. I have other single shots like the NEF in various cartridges and a couple of Ruger #1's. I'm usually varmint hunting anyway and normally they only give you one shot so you learn to make it count.
