The PAGC wants their deputies to have a full set of teeth. Apparently this is the only real qualification. They work for us, something needs to be done about some of the clowns who get handed a badge.

On a semi-related note:  I was hunting in WV about 15 yrs ago. I was on a logging road deep in a WMA when an unmarked Cherokee pulled up. Vehicles were not allowed, so I assumed it was a WCO. Sure enough a uniformed officer sprang from his vehicle and began patting me down without so much as a hello. He then said 'do you have any weapons on you?' I replied 'Yes, I have a rifle in my left hand.' After warning me not to be a 'smart ass' he asked if I had any concealed weapons. I said no. He got back in his clown car and left.

Every profession has a tiny percentage of representatives who slipped through the cracks and don't belong there.  But the PGC has about as airtight of a screening, selection, and training process as there is for WCOs and DWCOs.  Then too, everybody has a bad day and just fails to perform to the best of his ability in an isolated given encounter.  But about 95% (or more) of the time, personal gripes against LEOs can be attributed to one of three characteristics of the griper.  Either:

1  They are jealous of a person having a job they would like to have,
2  They have a deepseated resentment of all figures of authority, or
3  They stand diametrically opposed to the societal need for laws and their enforcement, especially when applied to
    them.

Stillkickin-- I trust you can back up this assessment with some sort of empirical evidence.

I have had a dozen or so interactions with DEPUTY WCO's in my life. I was treated with respect exactly twice. I was cited exactly zero times. You say 95% of them are good, but in my QUANTIFIABLE experience only 16% are good.

In my experience, LEO's who throw out the 'aw they're just jealous' card have something to hide.

After a heavy-handed and officious interview with three of Pennsylvania's finest WCO's - An interview that was promptly followed-up with an intentionally biased report of our discussion - I decided to free myself of any further contact with, or insult from, officers of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Thereafter, and for the succeeding 14 years of our residency here in Pennsylvania, I have neither hunted nor fished anywhere inside the Commonwealth.  I'm handicapped; and I told those men that if they were going to remain uncooperative and continue to deal with me in such an unreasonable and officious manner then I would simply not hunt or fish, at all, in Pennsylvania.  I meant it!

They stuck to their rude and unreasonable bureaucratic behaviors, made slight of my handicap and offered me no genuine help with a serious physical disability.  At several points in our conversation, these officers even expressed doubt that there was anything, at all, actually wrong with me!  Later on, and after reading their contrived and bogus report of our discussion, I firmly made up my mind that, 'they would be ice skating in Hell' before I'd ever hunt or fish in Pennsylvania.

For well over a decade, now, I've kept that promise to myself.  Neither was I surprised when one of these WCO guys finally got himself shot last month.  Life often has a way of giving people what they go around asking for.

In case anyone is wondering:  In the state in which I grew up, my family is unusually prominent in both public education and law enforcement.  I'm not a difficult person to get along with.  Someone's really got to be a, 'prick with a badge' before I'll take exception.  Shortly after we moved to the Commonwealth, three agents of the Pennsylvania Game Commission surprised me by acting just that way.

To whoever started this thread:  You have my sympathy; and I believe every word you say.

The WCO that was shot and killed in the line of duty would have been in high school 14 years ago.Your post was way out of line.

You forgot to say, 'In my opinion.'  14 years ago, you weren't there either; so get off your high horse.

I don't need to say in my opinion. There was one WCO shot in the line of duty.It was 31 year old WCO David Grove.Fourteen years ago he would have been 17 years old therefore he couldn't possibly have harassed anyone in the line of duty. The post was out of line and that's not just my opinion.

i have to agree it was out of line! he was shot by a poacher at night while doing his job!  i have dealt with many GC while hunting or preparing to hunt and never found them to out of line at all, some were not very social but i can't blame them for that, look what can happen when you know every person you are about to talk to is armed

Not to mention, the shooter was a convicted felon that said he wasn't about to go back to jail.I'm relatively certain the guy didn't get killed because of any rude comment he made.

I have been checked several times , most were good at their job . One had watched us hunt duck. He was following us out , with out us knowing . The lead guy says the game warden is in here someplace . I say wonder where that SOB is and about 10 feet behind me comes a voice "RIGHT HERE" . He was an EX Navy seal. Really nice guy checked us and told us we had obeyed every state law but one guy had toted out anothers bird and that was a fed no no but not his worry. Once a fed warden ran up in our blind , I drew back to hit him as he was not in uniform or displaying a badge. He got all worked up but his partner calmed him down and we all had a good laugh. Lets face it when duck hunting ya never know if the warden had a good breakfast or not  :D
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
