On a Drilling what does 16/1 mean

I get the 16 means 16 ga but what does the /1 mean when you see 16/1 with the proof marks?

I am looking at a drilling made in 1957 and it has 16/1 on the shotgun barrels.  I think it means 2 1/2 shell size.

And for you MR drilling there is no prize  :o :o :o   :D

I'm interested as well in the answer to this question. I would think by 1957 everything in 16ga would be 2&3/4" lenfth but I wait for the experts answer  :o  along with you Dougk.

Upon further inspection the date on the drilling was 1938.

And the 16/1 is the barrel gauge (16.1 gauge), while the 16 inside a circle is the chamber gauge.
