Drill press case trimmers - Anyone use them?
« on: December 11, 2003, 06:48:36 PM »
I would like to know if anyone here has experience with either of these two drill press style trimmers.

Both models utilize your existing drill press to trim cases quickly.

I want a really fast way to trim cases maintaining accuracy and integrity, while requiring a minimum amount of effort to insert and remove the case.

Thanks for your insite!

I have the Forster. Did a review on it on the old Products Test Page quite some while back. I really like it but with my drill press it is not for final finish trimming. The only reason however is that the stop on my drill press is not positive enough. If it were I could use it for all case trimming. I actually got it to trim .30-30 cases for making .30 and .357 Herrett cases. It sure makes the arduous task of doing a lot of trimming mighty easy and quick.

You can find the review at: http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/product_test/review-17.shtml

Thanks Graybeard, for the reply.

Actually, I had found and read your article through a google search. It is a good review, and while it covers the Forster product, I have found almost nothing on the Lyman. However, the Lyman base looks just a little faster on the load/unload.

As to drill press inaccuracy. I've got to justify a press for more than just reloading. So I'm going up a notch or two in quality. That should do the trick. Finding a decent model in any power tool is a challege these days!

Like Graybeard, i got a drill press case trimmer for heavy duty trimemming.  i n my case making .219 Donaldson Wasp cases, 500 of them.  The trimmer paifd for it's self and then some.

For power trimming accurately I got the adapter that screws in the end of the trimmer shaft on you case trimer  so you can use your cordless screw driver for power.

Double D & Graybeard;

Have you ever tried chucking the Lee Case Trimmer in the drill press?

http://www.leeprecision.com/catalog/browse.cgi?1071340551.1689=casecon.html

The Lee trimmer is designed with a fixed overall length-cutting guide.  This guide or pin extends through the primer flash hole and bottoms out on the base of the shell holder and controls the depth of cut.

Not me. I honestly don't use a lot of Lee Products. I use some of their molds, their shell holder packs and LOVE their AutoPrime but haven't used a lot of their other products.

Like DD I have the adapter and use a small hand held electric screw driver to power my Forster Original Case Trimmer which I've also done a review on. I've been using that trimmer since I started reloading and the power adapter since I noticed it was available.

If one has a flatbased cordless drill, one can use the Lee shell holder and the trimmer and can trim, chamfer and deburr a case in about 5-8 secs.  I use Lee Universal deprimer, HandiPrime?, and in each caliber I use their crimper.  The rest of my equipment is Lyman, RCBS.  I have a Lyman hand trimmer that I feel certain that I can do all of the above before you can use the drill press.  Not for certain, looked to go that way but changed my mind.
