Hoping for a Short History of This SB2
« on: December 06, 2010, 11:45:17 AM »
Greetings all. This is my first time posting on the forum. I am familiar with forums though, and have searched to the best of my ability for information pertaining to this particular SB2. I am purchasing it from GunBroker, and am supplied with no information other than the pictures and description of (H & R Handi Rifle Model SB2, 270 Win, Single Shot, 24" Barrel With Muzzle Brake, Laminated Stock & Forearm, Rubber Recoil Pad, Sling Studs, Scope Base - No Sights, Hammer Extension, Stock Has Numerous Nicks & Scratches, Metal Finish Is Excellent, Bore Is Excellent.)

I was under the impression that Handi SB2 rifles were only ever made with plain wood or synthetic furniture. This one has a laminated wooden stock and a ported muzzle. Can someone enlighten me if they are familiar with this version of SB2?

Thank you,
Brian

Hi Brian and welcome aboard buddy, come often and stay late!!

That rifle appears to be a .270 Ultra Comp with a laminated camoflage (color) wood stock. It is a fine rifle. I have an Ultra Comp in 30-06 and the .270 and 30-06 were the only calibers the factory ever made in the compensated (Ultra Comp) configuration. If you supply us with the first 2 letters of the serial number we can advise you of the year of manufacture or you can just check the FAQ's for that information. Others here may be able to add more info for you....<><....:)

Welcome! I've got two of the Ultracomps also, one of each, H&R made them 1997-2003 according to the BBGV.  ;)

Thank you for the welcome. That was certainly sufficient information to ease my mind. I will post further information once I receive the rifle. I am interested in learning all that can be learned about my new rifle. Nice to have found such a wealth of information.

Welcome Brian.

My Handi addiction started with the same Ultra Comp .270 back about 10 years ago. Most of them that I've heard of on GBO seem to be good shooters. Take note of the hearing protection caution, as these are truly loud. Ear plugs plus muffs is what I wear when shooting mine. In case you don't already know, the muzzle brake can be removed and the rifle can be shot without it.

Bill, that is the sort of talk that already makes me so excited to own such a truly American novelty. I can't wait to receive my rifle. It'll actually be the first rifle I've ever owned, apart from a multitude of other, non-hunt-worthy firearms. All my other deer hunts have been sponsored, so to speak, through borrowed rifles. Any suggestions on appropriate action once one has received a previously used rifle?

Best advice I can give now is whilst you are waiting on delivery of your new rifle is to spend time reading through the 2 stickies:
FAQ's and HELP ****PLEASE READ!!!****
Handi Basics 101

There is a wealth of information collected in there on Handi rifles.

Brian,

Glad you bought the 270 UC, I saw it on gunbroker a couple of days ago and logged off and stayed off so I wouldn't be tempted. :(
