I have been looking around a little for a really good 22 mag auto loader. Accuracy is my biggest concern here. I want one that will split hairs on a nats ass at a hundred yards, but a one inch group at that range is probably more realistic. Who makes the best for between 200 and 300 bucks? I have had rugers in the past and I dont really care for there lousy triggers. I will be using it for mostly target shooting and small varments. I would also consider the 17hmr if it was super accurate and nice but I am leaning more toward the 22mag. Why an auto loader? I guess I just think they are neat. What are the opinions out there?

In that price range and looking for that kinda accuracy I think you best forget the semiauto and buy you a Marlin bolt gun. My Marlin 882 SS easily stays under an inch at 100 yards and usually between 1/2" and 3/4" and cost me about $179 as I recall. Wish it had a nice gray laminated wood stock rather than the plastic one on it but it sure does shoot nice.

I think Remington, Ruger and Volquartsen might be the only semiauto rifles available. All I'm aware of anyway. Only the Volquartsen is likely to get you the accuracy you want but the price isn't gonna be in your range. The Ruger can be made to do it but then you'd have as much as the Volquartsen in it. Dunno about the Remington. No after market parts I'm aware of for it.

There are still some of the discontinued Marlin autos floating around yet--model 922 IIRC.

Also think I remember seeing CZ .22mag autos out too.

As for accuarcy of these 2 ---you tell me---I've never owned either.

There are aftermarket barrels, hammers, and stocks available for the Remington 597 Mag. Volquartsen and Jarvis are just a couple of the manufacturers for hammers and barrels. I've got a Remington 597 LS in 17 HMR. It's a very nice autoloading rifle with very good accuracy. I can switch it to the 22 Mag caliber with just a barrel change. MI VHNTR

I was just at the Volquartsen web site, and yep, that was just what I was looking for. Then I saw the prices. Yikes!! I wont be owning one of those anytime soon.
I do like the looks of that laminated stock 597 though. Hmm, there is a gun show tomorrow too. What is an average price for one?

I have a Ruger 10/22 Mag that shoots under an inch at a 100 with Remington 33 VMaxs. However, it has a Hogue overmold stock and a Volquartsen Heavy barrel with the Volquartsen 22 Mag Match chamber and a few extras on the bolt and trigger group.

I know this is above your stated price range. It's got almost $600 total with everything, but I took over a year to build it that way and the "hurt" was spread out with time. Most pieces were ordered individually and some were purchased used. Included in my total price was a used Japan made Tasco 4-16x40 AO scope.

I almost messed up recently and traded it away, but something clicked on how much I like this gun and I kept it.

Well, I gave up on the 22 mag idea. I just couldnt find what I was looking for in my price range. I did look at some fine bolt rifles, but I just had my mind set on an auto loader, to me they are just more fun. I ended up getting a 22lr instead. Its a Ruger 10/22 target model. It has the hammer forged match barrel, laminated wood stock, and the trigger isnt like any Ive shot in the past, its actually pretty decent. I know the 22lr wont have the performace of the 22mag or 17hmr, but it should be good enough out to a hundred yards for targets and maybe ground squirels, anything much farther then that and my 7mm will just have to do. This is the nicest Ruger Ive seen. Also at the gun show the prices were rediculous so I bought it from a local gun shop and saved almost a hundred bucks. Anyone else have one of these? and how do you like it?
