Got a big surprise yesterday
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:54:34 AM »
Got a surprise yesterday.  I went to the Fairbanks tannery to talk to the owner and hangout for a while.  Al the owner, was spreading my Grizzly hide out to inspect and hang it to dry.  Al made the comment that it was big for an Interior Sow.  I commented it's only a six footer.  Al said "No, it's more like seven.  We'll measure it once I take it out of the tumbler and it's fully dry.  I am thinking it will go over seven feet".  Wow, I had never really thought of it as being a big Grizzly.  Looked average to me and we never bothered to measure it before taking it in for tanning.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

It is a well documented fact that should the temperature drop below 72 degrees F a Native Floridian will FREEZE TO DEATH.  I should know!  I have done it several times!

Good bear Sourdough.  I don't think I could hunt an area where I was not the King of the Food Chain.  Being IN the food chain and out in the woods is not that appealing to me.  Perhaps that is just a Proximity Factor from where I grew up and live today.

TommyT: I left St Pete/Tampa two weeks ago and it was in the 80s.  I was sweating like mad.  Talked to my friend in St Pete last night she said it was in the 30s.  Well it's .35 below here in North Pole Alaska.  It's cold but you can get used to it.

Land_Owner:  It makes it interesting when you get out there and you realize you are not the top of the food chain.  That flimsy little firearm and your brain is the only thing keeping you out of the food chain.  Some people just can not handle being the hunted.  Been there more than once, gets the adrenaline flowing.  What's life without a little excitement.  Going out this weekend calling wolves.  Just think, here you sit and here comes a pack ranging from 5 to 30 animals.  They are coming in to kill and eat something.  Here you sit immatating a wounded Moose/Caribou, or a single wolf or coyote invading their territory.  You sit till they are close then you wonder if that Mini-14 is going to cycle properly, as you aim and squeeze off that first shot.

Never have had the opportunity to hunt a grizzly. Size wise I would guess however that nine footer at 50 yards that does not know you are there looks a lot smaller than a six footer in full charge twenty feet away. ;)

Carry a 45 LC or 44 Mag. Revolver and extra rounds as a back up!  Forget the semi-auto pistols, unless you are willing to bet the Farm on it.

How about the snow birds ?  ;D

IMHO its their fault for this cold Weather
Heres how it goes
They start their trek south bound down I 75 and  I 95  then the,Private Planes, and those Dam Jumbo Jets.
Once they all get going it just takes a couple weeks, and We Get the
 Down Draft Bingo Florida's Freezing :'( :'(
Things get better around March/April  when they reverse the role usually its a much slower draw.
