Got a plesent surprise yesterday
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:56:05 AM »
Got a surprise yesterday.  I went to the Fairbanks tannery to talk to the owner and hangout for a while.  Al the owner, was spreading my Grizzly hide out to inspect and hang it to dry.  Al made the comment that it was big for an Interior Sow.  I commented it's only a six footer.  Al said "No, it's more like seven.  We'll measure it once I take it out of the tumbler and it's fully dry.  I am thinking it will go over seven feet".  Wow, I had never really thought of it as being a big Grizzly.  Looked average to me and we never bothered to measure it before taking it in for tanning.

As the hide gets cleaned of fat and little tendons a hide does for sure get bigger. It will lose some when drying but not much. Of course the trophy is only a reminder of the hunt

Sounds good Rog!  Sounds honest too.  As a kid I remember a number of guys fussing about taxidermy folks giving them the wrong bear.   It almost always was that their "10 foot" bear shrank to 8 or less feet when it came home for display.  I kinda think in most of those cases the hunt story had grown instead of the hide shrinking.  Nice when its the other way around.

Dand:  I'm 100% sure I will get my hide back.  First one claw is missing on a front foot.  Second I screwed up on the left back leg and made a wrong cut.  Had to recut it and therefore there is a flap of skin that will have to be repaired when mounting.  Third the owner of the Fairbanks Tannery is a close friend.  Fourth the locking tag that was registered in my name is still on the hide.

I agree with you about the other hides.  Everytime the story is told the animal grows in many cases.  Don't know how many 2000lb Moose I've heard of being shot, with 72" spreads.  Or all the 800lb Black Bears.  And Coyotes as big as Wolves.  Oh well at least my little bear grew on it's own.  I was supposed to pick it up today, but got busy and did not make it to the Tannery.  Oh well, there is always Monday.

ha ha - 2000 pound moose - how many times have I heard that?  Even hitch hiking in Utah.  A guy gave me a ride off a ski hill, the minute he learned I was from Alaska, he tells me his uncle shot one of those monsters.

Post a photo when you get your hide! Did you get a head mount or just a tanned hide?
