The true rulers of the Food Chain
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:00:24 AM »
Some of you will remember the problem we had last spring out in Chignik.  Wolves killed and ate a school teacher that had gone out jogging.  Oh, how the environmental groups howled.  Now winter has set in and the problem has came back in another area.  We will continue to have this problem until we do some serious preditor control.  The preditor numbers are too high.

While visiting my folks the last few weeks I saw an awful lot of Coyotes, across Northern Georgia, and Tennessee.  You guys will have similer problems in the coming years, with dogs and cats disappearing.  Here is the article I got from todays Fairbanks Daily News Miner.

Aggressive wolves snatching pets out of yards in Alaska village
by Mary Pemberton / The Associated Press Fairbanks Daily News Miner
Dec 08, 2010

Mayor Scott Anderson doesn't travel around his small town of Port Heiden unarmed. Neither do his neighbors.

That's because hungry wolves have been wandering into town in search of food, sneaking into yards and snatching dogs and cats.

More evidence of that was found Tuesday morning. A pool of blood was discovered on a village road, and Anderson said you could see where wolves dragged the animal away.

Another dog had been killed.

It is hunger that is bringing the wolves to this town of about 100 people. While wolves have sneaked into Port Heiden for food before, it is usually just one or two of the animals, and they arrive at night.

This is different. These wolves are bold and hard to scare off. Sometimes they just sit and stare.

Now, the wolves are showing up during the day. And residents are scared.

The wolves could be descending on Port Heiden for several reasons. Perhaps it's because the dwindling number of caribou in the area tend to gather near the town to find protection from predators. It could be because now that the bears are gone, wolves are feeding on the carcasses of walrus and other marine mammals that wash ashore near Port Heiden.

At least three packs of wolves have been bothering the town. The largest pack is made up of about 20 animals; the others have between seven and 15 wolves.

Immediate action needs to be taken, Anderson said. The town about 425 miles southwest of Anchorage wants the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to allow aircraft to be used to track and kill the aggressive wolves.

A Fish and Game area biologist held a town meeting in Port Heiden on Monday.

"The strange thing is the number of wolves they are reporting," said region supervisor Bruce Dale. He said Fish and Game is coming up with an action plan.

In the meantime, everyone in Port Heiden is armed - even the mayor, who travels the town on a four-wheeler with a rifle strapped on the back.

"You won't see anybody walking around without a gun around here," said lifelong Port Heiden resident James Christensen, 45. "You could open any car door in this town and you will see a rifle sitting on the seat."

Wolves coming into Port Heiden has residents thinking about what occurred in the village of Chignik Lake last March: A teacher out jogging was killed by two hungry wolves.

Port Heiden residents in recent weeks have killed about six wolves, and they were skinny animals with sucked-in stomachs, Christensen said.

He said his dogs were barking Monday night so looked outside his house and found one of his dogs cowering in the corner of the door, wanting in.

There were wolf tracks all around his home in the new snow, he said.

"They came about 15 feet from the front door and then they went all around the outbuildings outside the house," Christensen said.

He said the wolves are visiting just about every house in Port Heiden.

"I guess mainly they must be looking for dogs because they have eaten quite a few already," Christensen said. "They got my friend's dog here a couple of days ago. They dragged him right out from underneath his porch."

From time to time there are articles of coyotes grabbing pets. Fur-Fish_andGame reported a coyote attack (fatal) in new hampshire IIRC last year.  If its just pets I usually chuckle about it. The reason being is that a few years ago here in WA, the voters outlawed the use of dogs and bait stations for cat and bear. I will be saddened when their vote brings the death of a human. Cat and bear "troubles" reports have gone up in WA in the past, but seem to be stable. I haven't in all honesty really kept up on incidents here. Ferrell dogs were a problem where I live a number of years ago. We cleaned 'em up. I would not tolerate wolves, or any other animals close to my grandkids. If they aren't wearing kevlar, they're not protected.

Just made a crazy 4 day/2500 mile round trip from San Antonio to Lexington, KY and back.  I have never seen so many dead 'yotes on the road.  These weren't in TX, they were mostly in TN and KY.  Saw 4 live ones on the side of the road.  2 singles and a pair hunting (all at night).  I bet we saw 12-15 'yotes each way.  It was crazy...  they are everywhere.  Guess I'm gonna have to take up varmint hunting.

There are not enough varmint hunters in all of America to ward off an explosion of canine predators.  People will just have to ARM themselves, except the PETA Folks and Liberals, who, in that event get the following sign posted by their neighbors:

Last year I had a friend up the road that lost a big black lab to coyotes.  He watched out the window as 6 of them circled the dog and brought it down.  This dog probably weighed 80 or so pounds.  He gave up keeping chickens and turkeys because of them.

He has neighbors so he is afraid to shoot for fear of hitting them.

I told him if he would put up a tripod stand or something similar so I could shoot down at them, I would give it a go.....

LAND_OWNER. Love the sign. Coyotes are abundant around here. Every snow I find where they come up to the house and through the barn. When I let the wannabes out at night I go with them with a good flashlight, I want the coyotes to know I'm there. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

The chair of one of the groups I get with every wednesday to discuss these kinds of things called the mayor of Port Hieden this morning.  Over night they lost more dogs, then this morning an owner saw a pack trying to get to his dog.  The man jumped out of his truck thinking the wolves would run away.  Suddenly he realized he was now their target.  He just made it back into his truck in time.  The wolves jumped on the truck trying to get to him.  Our question to the Mayor, "where was the guys gun"?

Alaska Dept of Fish and Game is putting togeather a plan for relief out there.  Not sure yet what it is going to be.  Port Heiden is down in the Rain Forest portion of Alaska.  They get a lot of percipitation, but at this time of year it is rain, snow, rain, snow.  Freeze thaw to the point the locals gave up on trying to set traps.  Set traps in the morning, rain will come at noon and freeze the traps in.  Then 8 to 10 inches of wet snow that evening burying the trap.  The mayor said these animals are not afraid of people, and they seem to be starving.  So anything that moves is a target.  Hope they are shot before they get to a kid or any other person.

It was announced today that the Dept of F&G have already moved planes and shooter teams into place.  They should have already started by now tracking the packs and shooting them once they are located.

From what I've been told the houses are pretty close, usually are in villages.  Most of the people there are fishermen, they don't hunt much.  I'd hate to turn those guys loose with rifles in town.  Port Hyden is near Chignik, Alaska.  Chignik is where the teacher was killed and eaten last spring by wolves.
