« on: December 08, 2010, 11:08:31 AM »
just got me a contender pistol with a 7mm tsu barrel and it shoots alsome . well now in looking into getting another barrel was thinking of a 45lc/410. my question is with a 10 barrel and new horady bullets can it shoot up to 100 yards?

I'd get a straight 45 Colt barrel without the .410 if I wanted to shoot 100 yards. If you search through the old posts about the 45/410 barrels you'll find that most people have accuracy problems with theirs due to the amount of freebore the 45 colt has to travel through from the 3" .410 chamber. Since you already have a 7mm TCU I would use that for long range shooting. The 45/410 works much better as a 410 than it does a 45 Colt. I have a 45 Colt only barrel that is pretty accurate so that would be the way to go if you want to shoot at 100 yards. I used the Hornady FTX bullets for deer hunting this year but unfortunately didn't get a shot.

I have one of the 45 Colt /410 barrels and thought it would be a great mountain gun.
45 Colt for what ever and the 410 for grouse and rabbits.
Well it will work as a 45 Colt to finish off a deer or elk.  the 410 is Ok to about 10 yards (it is not a short 410 shot gun)  and slugs or buck out of it are not as powerful as the 45 colt loads.
The sights are funky, adjustable but funky.  If you want to shoot the 45 colt you remove the choke tube, if you want to shoot shot shells you screw back in the choke tube or there are huge holes in your pattern as the wad is spinning.  You can shoot the 45 colt mild rounds through the choke tue but it is designed to stop the wad from spinning and does the same with the projectile.  Guns and Ammo Mag TV show did a tourture test on it.  I have not tried this.  You may beable to find the clip on the G&A TV website.  But having to change a choke tube in the mountain did put a damper on my idea when hunting in ID or MT on horse back of having a big bore and small shotgun all in one on my hip
If you are looking for a 10" hunting barrel - I would look at a 44 Mag.
Hornady makes the same bullets for the 44 Mag
Reloading 44 mag to 44 Special levels is possible and 44 mag is easier to find in a hunting load than the 45 colt loads that are mostly loaded to cowboy specs in your local stores.  not saying you can not hunt with 45 colt cowboy loads but why limit your self.  The 44 mag can do every thing 45 colt can and all guns chambered for hit can handle the hot loads, while not all 45 colts can.
If you already have a cowboy gun then You are limited to the pressure levels of the Cowboy gun.
You don't want to get your ammo mixed up and ruin a firearm.
OH and since the 410 is a 2.5" there is a lot of free space before the 45 cold engages the rifeling and accuracy is not as pin point as if you had a dedicated barrel to only one caliber.
PM me and I will send you pictures of the 45 / 410 barrel and show you what I am talking about.

I have had a number of these barrels, most came on a pistol that I bought for frame and grips. I have a super 14 stainless now and it is a good snake gun and fun to shoot skeet with but you need to be on them before they get 20 yrds out other wise a miss as for the 45 might as well do as has been suggested and get a plain 45 long colt only as the long jump on the 45/410 barrel is not very good for long shots and when you look at the specks on the 45 lc it is really falling off by the time it gets out to 100 yrs. 357 mag or 44 mag works muck better. If you are stuck on 45 cal might look at 45 wind. mag but I do have the specks handy for that one.

I used the 225 grain FTX factory ammo for hunting this year (long story on why I picked that) but normally I would use my own reloads with the 250 grain XTP or 240 grain XTP-MAG.

The 45 Colt will definitely work at 100 yards IF you reload. Factory ammo doesn't have the velocity to reach out that far but there is plenty of published Ruger & T/C data with velocities of 1450 fps using a 240 grain JHP out of a 10" Contender barrel. At that velocity if you sight in at 100 then you'll be around 2 inches high at 50 yards.

everyone always talks about the 45 lc not shooting good in the 45/410 and it doesnt........,and i dont think i would shoot at 100 with mine but 75 is my limit on it.....i actually thing from what i have seen others post as mine shoots a little better than most ....not nearly as accurate as my 10 in 30-30 but heck its way more useful....and i get good results out to 25 yds with 3in 410 shells...........just cked mine it has a 3 in chamber.........mack

At 1,250 fps. and zeroed at 80 yrds. the max. point blank range ( plus or minus 2 in.) is 100 yrds. You should be able to get alittle more than 1,250 with the Contender. With some practice and a good range finder and drop chart you should be able to take deer at 200 yrds. That is if you practice.

I had a 45 colt barrel and it shot one hole groups at 50 yds. with a 255lswc over 8.0g w231 and wlp primers.  I had a 4x pistol scope on it and took a nice Ohio doe with it.  Sorry to say I traded it in on a Ruger 44 Super Blackhawk.
