Chevy Problem- 98/02 Suburban ABS brakes not effective.
« on: December 08, 2010, 01:56:07 PM »
I have a 99 suburban the breaks are scarey, found the problem in a unrelated forum thread on a snowplowing forum.
What is interesting is this recall is for dealers only, so it wasnt announced nation wide, as you read it you will see I dont live in a 'Salt Belt State' but in my arctic coastal town the city sprays brakish water on our streets to keep the summer dust down, hence the salt effect on ABS brakes on the suburban, am working on getting more data on how to clean the ABS speed sensors.
Our roads and streets are hard packed snow and ice 8 months out the year, the ABS is scarey, coming up to a intersection 3'rd car back we have had allot of low speed near crash's from funky ABS.

I had a problem with mine on my 06 pickup. Found that the wheel bearings were bad and the anti lock senor is built inot the wheel bearing so when they go the sensor screws up too.

Makes sense, this 99 chevy suburban has 16K arctic miles on it, we hardly ever get a vehicle up over 35mph as our roads are so washboardy they'd toss ya in the ditch, It may very well be the bearings are starting to turn bad, since we dont drive a hour over 40mph the bearing hasent progressed to the noise stage yet.
Just last month I did change a bad front bearing on a 01/Ford Ranger that made the whirlpool washing machine agitator noise when driving down the road.

If you notice my above picture the road is textured.....its as rough as a corncob and hard as concrete, had a warm snap that turned the snow to slush then droped to -5F, whole stinking town is that way.
