I like to go on my first hunt in'o4(bear that is) and I have a question.I shoot a malin 35 ok for bear or should I look for something else? :?

I have never hunted bear either, I have been trying to get my old hunting partners (who now play pitch and golf) to try hog hunting. As it goes around every one would rather go for bears. So from central Iowa where do we find a decent bear hunt? Further discussion will be needed on what to do with this animal, as I have eating them, and not my favorite.

The 35 rem is a great round for blackbear. If you like to shoot it and are comfortable with it, use it. One of my pards took a nice (one shot) blackie with me last spring and it "creamed" him! It travelled all of 10 yards before hitting the dirt! The other fellow That hunted with me also used a lever rifle in 45/70. I felt the odd man out as I fell victim to using the old bolt action. Be that as it may, the 35 Rem was every bit impressive as was my 338 Winny!

:sniper: If you are thinking of a bear hunt in Maine you had best do it next year. That referendum is going to be tough to beat because we have so many new people in Maine who do not hunt and the Humane Society will push hard to get the bear hunt eleminated. Then what is next. Don't forget those who are reading this, they don't like fishing either. If you believe they should be stopped, contact SAM and volunteer to help or donate some money for the campaign. Our hunting and fishing is on the line.

Jim-in-Iowa: There are plenty of bears just north of you in Minnesota. The state DNR has a web site that explains about the allocation of permits, costs, guides, etc. I believe May is the month where applications should be made so there's a few months to stude the situation. As far as rifles go, I should add that for most folks over 40, they should use a 4x or 6x 'scope, especially in the deep cover conditions of the Northwoods. The favorate time for the rascals to move to your bait is 1 minute before total blackness. A 'scope helps tell the difference between Mr Bear and all the other bear-like shadows in that zone.

Thanks for you reply I will check out the sight and do a google search. Haven reach 60 and my lever 44 has a reciever sight, are hand guns allowed for bear hunting?

Yes, Jim, handguns are allowed. Minnesota is probably unique in that it lists cartridge by cartridge exactly which are permitted. It's a VERY long (and somewhat interesting ) list. This year's season was the first time not all "tags" were isued as there were more available in some areas than applicants. Next year will probably be the same.
