Wolf Trouble on the Alaska Peninsula again.
« on: December 08, 2010, 09:02:07 PM »
I spent a week in Port Heiden in 2009 and there are some good hunters / trappers there.  Have a close friend working down there right now from my home town.  So this is of great interest to me.  My friend says he found some snares in the store down there and they hope to make a set. There's several guys with 308 cal AR rifles  (+20 round mags) as well as other stuff and I think they'll do their best to stop this problem.  They've already got 6. This is a bit crazy. That town is real spread out and very small. In summer you have to watch out for brown bears. Now wolves in winter. Heck I walked all over down there with no gun but bear tracks kept me very alert - and wishing I had at least a side arm.

State unleashes hunters on aggressive southwest wolves
AERIAL HUNT: State responds to community's safety concerns.

State officials have approved a plan for the aerial shooting of wolves that have killed pets and scared residents in and near Port Heiden.
he plan was approved after the Alaska Peninsula community appealed to the state for help with three wolf packs that have been killing pets and are becoming increasingly bold around humans. The wolves pose a threat to the town, public safety and wildlife officials said.
The wolf-killing operation was to begin immediately. Pilots under contract with the agencies were already in Port Heiden, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said Wednesday.
The hungry wolves have killed five dogs and two cats, including two dogs recently. While they mostly come into town at night, the wolves also have been seen during the day.
Port Heiden Mayor Scott Anderson said he welcomed the help: "We sure don't want to lose nobody," he said.
He also said the village doesn't want to lose any more pets.
Department of Public Safety Commissioner Joseph Masters said the wolves would be killed as quickly as possible in a coordinated effort. The plan was to back-trail wolf tracks to locate the animals that have been involved in incidents in the village.
The operation will involve fixed-wing aircraft and pilots under contract with the two agencies, said Bruce Dale, the Department of Fish and Game's area supervisor. He said shooters most likely will be department employees.
The exact number of wolves involved in the attacks on dogs and cats in the town was not known, but residents have reported three packs with anywhere from seven to 20 animals.
"The frequency, aggressive nature, and number of wolves involved in the attacks is unacceptable from a public safety standpoint," said Lem Butler, Fish and Game's area biologist in King Salmon.
Butler flew to the community Monday afternoon to gather information on the wolf attacks.
Residents say wolves previously have come into Port Heiden looking for food, but not in these numbers. They report that the half dozen wolves killed in recent months by residents were skinny.
The situation has residents scared and thinking about what occurred in the village of Chignik Lake, another Alaska Peninsula town, in March: A teacher out jogging was killed by two hungry wolves.
Dale said the Port Heiden situation was serious.
"We will take out any wolves we can link to incidents in the village," he said.

Dand:  We talked to the mayor Wednesday morning.  He told us about new dog kills overnight.  He also told us about one man that drove up and saw wolves trying to get to his dog.  He got out thinking he could scare the wolves off.  Wrong, He just made it back to his truck in time.  Things can get nasty real fast.  I was under the impression the guys living there were all fishermen, and did not understand about trapping and hunting that well.  Glad to hear I was given bad information.  Hope those snares can connect.  Rog

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Well by now Rog I'm sure you've seen/heard that a number of wolves have been become research items. KTUU and ADN don't seem to agree on how many yet.  I think ADFG / AST did the right thing and capitalized on some good conditions quickly.  Gotta down there...nice weather doesn't last long.  Sounds like quite a few of the animals were young - maybe they hadn't lived long enough to learn to fear man.

I'm sure the effort should help.  And with the badly depleted caribou herd on the Ak Pen this is good for them too. Pt Heiden people have been trying to protect that little bunch. In fact I think the caribou probably hang there partly because they had some protection by the locals, as well as probably a good winter food supply.

A number of local leaders have been calling for this kind of action for years now.  I'm sure they're hoping this culling will continue.  I'm sure they're happy with this effort.

I sent  congratulations to one of the biologists likely working on the project. Told him Merry Christmas and to ignore the screeching that has already started.

Talked to my friend in Pt Heiden today.  He didn't know that ADFG had started gunning the wolves - he's real busy on a job, and no way to get news.  But he did see an aircraft flying low and slow over the old abandoned village site and thought he heard shooting. He heard a rumor that this was supposed to  happen and that M16's might be put to use. He told of one guy who didn't have a gun, had his dog dragged off the porch. The owner had a seal bomb (big fire cracker like 2x or 3x M80) he threw at the wolves. They backed off. Let the bomb go off then resumed eating the guy's dog - NO FEAR! One night he and others went out with rifles looking for wolves. They couldn't see the animals but had 20 to 30 howling around the area all at once.  He feels this is one time the media is UNDER reporting the info versus the normal over hype.  He said he knew of 3 wolves that had been shot within 50 feet of houses.
