.454 casull dies hornady or lee?
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:43:30 AM »
Have to ask...
is there a great difference between hornady and lee dies when it comes to produce really accurate loads in the .454 Casull.
Besides good components and trimmed cases of course,
are dies playing a major role, or is the quality equivalent nowadays?
Thank you

My first choice in dies is always Redding. But I know they are rich for many these days and RCBS is almost as good. But this isn't what you asked, as a general rule, I never choose LEE anything.  I have sold them for many many years and by and large the only products that are returned are LEE. Many here like and have had good luck with them. I have probably thirty plus sets of dies, I load allot. I have only ever had one die set fail it was a STD lee carbide 500 set. The carbide ring dinentigrated.
Do your self a favor, buy quality the first time. As a smart man once said the sweetness of a good deal sours with the reality of poor quality becomes apparent.

Nice said,
Thanks

Indeed i know about Redding and mostly use RBCS myself.
Sadly i only had the choice between Lee or Hornady quite rapidly from a friend.
Will listen to the advice and give Redding a try...

Go with Redding or RCBS and don't trim your cases.

If you will be loading cast bullets Dillon dies are the only way to go. If you will be loading all jacketed bullets about anything EXCEPTLee dies. The reason for Dillon dies with cast bullets is that you can pull off a clip and drop the bullet seater out of the die while it is still in the press and clean out the bullet lube.

I have both lee and hornady 454 dies. Both work fine. I kind of like the hornadys a bit better but couldnt tell you why. Im not a big fan of lee stuff but there usually what I buy when buying handgun caliber dies. Lately ive been buying hornady dies for rifle calibers and like them better then rcbs. Redding dies are great too but a bit more expensive.
