need good gun smith
« on: December 09, 2010, 05:56:45 PM »
I have just aquired a ball   ballard action that is in the r2 lovell caliber.  The problem is that the barrel is round and I want to make it octagon. Does anyone know of a gun smith that is capable of doing this

If you cant find a gunsmith locally who will do the work, you might want to check out a local machine shop, as it would be a pretty easy modification for a machinist with a milling machine.

Paul:  I would definately talk to a machinist to see how much metal would have to be removed to create the 'flats' you need for a octogonal barrel - it may be that more metal has to be removed than you want removed and that you would wind up with a really thin barrel.  You can also see what it would take to rebarrel the action and I would suggest you check with barrel makers listed here at Graybeard's as sponsors or check with other barrel makers to see what the cost of rebarreling vs recontouring is.  I believe that one way or another that barrel will have to come off in order to be properly machined.

Hello, Prebanpaul.  That sounds like an early target/varmint conversion.  Before I did anything to that barrel, I would first check carefully for any makers name or markings..This sounds like a late 1930's or 40's conversion & it could very well have a known barrelmakers name..which if ANY type of machining were done on it value would tank.  I know it's your gun and you can do what you like..but there are serious collectors out there.  Also, I am in process of aquiring an original .25-25 Ballard.  I spoke with some pretty well know Ballard experts, and their opinons are centerfire ballard loads are best kept in the black-powder range of pressure..that split breechblock is held together only by two little flat head screws.  Some of those late 1920-1930's smiths were kind of reckless when it came to pressure & action strength.  Best of luck!
