Hi folks,
I'm new to this forum and I have a few questions about the Rossi 92 that I hope some of you can answer.
1. I'm thinking of getting one in 44mag as a knock around truck rifle that can be used for coyotes, jackrabbits, badgers as well as the occasional mule deer hunt. Will this rifle handle heavy loads with a 300-320gr cast bullet?
2. I have looked at both the blue and stainless versions. Any thoughts??
3. I would really like to put a peep sight on which ever rifle I choose. Who makes a receiver sight for this action?
4. Lastly, how durable are these rifles?

Great!   ;D  I've got the 24 inch octagon barrel rifle version and absolutely LOVE it!  For your use I imagine you'll get the carbine version.

I don't know of any reason why the 92 wouldn't be able to handle any published 44 Mag load.   :-\

Personal preference.   :-\  But I don't like the look of SS rifles... or synthetic stocks... or trashy wimmins... or "pants on the ground" ...  or... well,  :-\  you get the idea!   :D

I don't believe the 92 is drilled or tapped for a receiver sight...  :-\  I 'spose you could get that done though...  I also don't think anyone makes a receiver sight for the 92.  Maybe a 94 sight would fit... I dunno...  :-\

I put a Marble's tang sight on mine.  The are drilled and tapped for that!   ;D  Check out pictures of original rifles and you'll see that that's what they wear.   ;)

Dunno,  :-\  never heard about anyone wearing one out!   :D  I know that replacement parts are made that some people automatically use to replace factory parts, but mine works just fine as is!   ;)

The only thing I don't like about the 92 is the fact that I didn't get one sooner!   :P

I have a 92 44mag with a 20in round barrel,and i really like mine it shoots great with winchester white box 240s.I use it as my deer rifle so its been in the rain and everything eles.I just have the factory sights on mine.It shoots good so i dont really see the need to change them.

Thanks for the info Guys,
I really like the looks of the blued version better but have concerns of rust and wear that the stainless version would help with. My tired old eyes do better with a peep sight than regular open sights. I am a gunsmith so drilling and tapping the receiver would be no problem. Just wanted to get some feedback from you folks that have and shoot these little rifles.

May be a little late to this party, but..... Steve Young (www.stevesgunz.com) makes a peep replacement for the top bolt safety.  The problem you may run into with receiver sights is that the '92 is top eject.

My 44 mag has a Williams peep on it, doesn't bother ejection at all.  Another wears one of Skinners peeps and a scout mount scope.  The stainless 454 Trapper has Williams Fire sights that are very usable as is.  DP

If I'm not mistaken, which sometimes is a mighty big "if,"  ;D  they make or at least made a SS 454 model.

Yes they make them in the 454.  I have a blue 20" and a stainless 16".  Liked the blue one so much, had to get another, so the stainless trapper came home with me.  Mini 45-70's is what they are, lotta fun to shoot.  Now Richard, who you tryin to fool? ???  This ain't no court room, this is yer GBO family, an' we know's ya better. ;D  DP

Receiver & tang peep sights, nominally for the Winchester Model 1894/94, will also fit a Model 1892 and/or Model 92 & all the clones from wherever.

Some rifles are factory prepped (drilled & tapped) for either receiver or tang peep sights, or bothh - or neither.  YMMV.

The side-mount receiver peep sights, like Williams FP & 5D, the Lyman, Redfield, etc, would all need the two 6-48 mounting holes D/T'd in the upper/rear of the left receiver wall - right where the peep prep is on a post-64 Winchester Model 94.

Both the top-mount XS peep sight and the top-mount Williams FP-94AE/5D-94AE ( for the side-eject Model 94's) will also fit, via D/T one 6-48 hole in the top of each receiver rail/wall rear end for the sight base.
The XS will require a front sight taller than issue to zero; while the Williams 94AE sights will zero using a front sight of issue height.

While Stevesgunz makes/sells a bolt peep that both replaces the bolt-top lawyer safety, his peep also rotates to act as a safety.

A Model 92 owner, with a rifle that has a bolt top safety, can also lose the lawyer safety - modifying it as a bolt peep via D/T it's center for a Skinner LoPro peep with a 6-48 stem (after first grinding off the safety ears).
