can I alter the bolt handle on a 110?
« on: December 11, 2010, 12:48:42 AM »
Just got a Savage 110 Sierra light wt 30-06 for my son.  Shot it today and it seems to be good.  But I noticed the bolt handle drags against the scope I have on it - a Leupold Vari X III  1.5-5.  That's not a fat scope but the bolt stem drags on the rear scope bell on opening. Don't want things to bind up or damage anything.

I'm wondering how to deal with that. Could I file the metal down a bit without losing significant strength?
Is there some other way to address the issue?
Is this common with 110's?

thanks.

Higher rings or shim the scope mounts.

If you have lows on there for the 20mm scope I would go to a set of medium rings and you should be fine.

You can easily take it off the bolt and either bend it some or grind some off or a combination of the two.  If you screw it up there are many different after market bolt handles avaliable for them.  Just remove the screw at the rear of the bolt and have at it.  Larry

oh Duh!  I DO have low rings on there.  I really like them, especially for my son as it puts the scope at the right level for his eye.  Why didn't I figure that out?
But it wouldn't be much trouble to try the mediums.

Thanks.
