Brass-Remington or Winchester?

Sometime this winter I'm considsering purchasing a rifle in 7mm-08 and would like to start off with 2-3 boxes of factory ammo then I'll just reload those brass. I hope to check everything for fit and function with the factory rounds then go to handloads.

Do you have a preference? I always lean toward Remington but want to be open to the Winchester if you guys think it is better. Probably wouldn't purchase Federal.

 When it comes to reloading them, (in the 7-08) I've got both. Can't really say which is better. I've gotten lucky enough to have picked a good set of RCBS dies for the 7-08 and get little to no runout with either the R-P or Win brass.

FWIW I've finished 4x loading's with the Win's and have seen no trouble, only 2x with the R-P, both showing good resiliance in the neck.
 And your right, the Fed brass and ammo is junk, the necks just seam a bit thin and hardnened after only 2x,they found the scrap bucket real quick.

 We had the best luck with Winchester Supreme factory ammo in 140 in our Handi 1-10, it at least gave 2" groups at 100. We tried Winchester and Remington ammo in 140's and 150's. It was buying factory ammo for that gun that finally (and thankfully) pushed me over the edge to start loading, that was alot of $$ for so-so accuracy.

Funny you leave Federal as last as its my first choice of the three!!! Star line is my top pic for new reloading brass.

But any will do, Remington new brass will come all dented up, esp the case mouths. Its kinda soft. But I use them all.

Federal is my 1st choice as well, I'm on my 7th or so loading with my 243 brass. Had a few split necks but can't complain, most all loads were full power as well.

I prefer Remington brass.  I am currently working up loads for my 300 win mag and 200 gr bullets. I bought 40 1x Fed cases to try. Necks started splitting right away. I've lost 6-7 now and I'm only on my 3rd-4th loadings.  10 Win cases in the same test have been fine except 1 neck split. I have loaded some Rem brass over 10 times with neck splits rare. When they get that old I toss and start new as I get worried about head separation - tho its never happened. And I was using full or near full power loads. I don't load so high the primer pockets get loose in 5 loadings -a'la Bob Hagel. In my 223 Ruger#1 Rem, Win, Hornady, LC, and Fed brass holds up well to many loadings. In my 30-06, Win brass seems to decline quickly compared to Rem.  So overall, I prefer Remington.

I have been mainly using 308 Hornady match and LC match in both 7mm-08 and 260 along with Fed, I just happen to have a bunch of all 3, have used Win and Rem also can't say if anyone is better then the other.

I will say I get 3-4 times the amount of 308 brass vs 7mm-08 or 260 for same price.

Accuracy and times reloaded all seem about same.

I have weighed lots of 06 brass and some 308 and 223 brass. I would expect that the same things I have found applies to 7mm 08 as well. Rem brass is the heaviest, Federal in between and Win is the lightest. What this means when you load them is that if you are loading your cases right up to the top, you can get more powder in a Winchester. For my 270 it is hard to get as much 4831 powder in Rem cases. I tap the case to settle the powder. The winnies hold the powder without problems. In my 223 I load heavy cases with a charge that is as much as they will hold and in light cases I load .2 gr more. That way both heavy cases and the light ones shoot into the same group, so I don't have to segregate them as I shoot them, only when I load them.

What this means to you when you are considering what to buy? If your loads are going to fill the case then I would recommend you get the Winchester cases. I have never had any indication that one is more durable than the other, so I guess if I was buying cases I would go with the winnies.

It really doesn't make much difference as far as reloading, just get all 3 boxes from the same lot and you won't have much variation.  Does anybody have any ammo on sale?

   Right now all the big stores have centerfire rifle ammo on sale and with rebates, can get 30-06, 308 243, 7-08 for about 10.00 a box after rebates.

I prefer Norma and RWS,but they are kinda tough for a working man. I usually get Winchester for non rimmed and Remington for the rimmed varieties. Seems like Winchester has a little more case capacitity.

My youngest son likes Winchester, I like Remington, My middle  son isn't picky as long as they go "boom".

My oldest son doesn't have a preference either..
