Does anyone have experience with the Savage 30R17? Its basically the Stevens Favorite of Crackshot. How would you compare it with other inexpensive singleshots such as the Handi Rifle by NEF or the Rossi? Best of luck. POW

While I don't have one of the new Model 30 Favorites, I do have one of the older Model 72 Crackshots that it replaces. I found the Crackshot, though a pretty little rifle, rather poorly made, with a horrendous trigger pull, and a very soft extractor that quickly wore out. In looking at the exploded diagram of the new Model 30, I see that the receiver has been redesigned to incorporate a tang (can be drilled/tapped for a tang sight), and the transfer bar system that contributed to the trigger problems of the Model 72 has been eliminated. I'm going to have to find one and get a first-hand look, may just have to get one. (Or, just spring for a Varner)

Can never have too many single shots...

Greg if you learn anything about this rifle keep us posted. I think this would be a fine companion rifle to my B-78 in 25/06. I cannot afford the Winchester 1885 in 17 HRM just to play with but the Savage is very affordable. I am intrigued by the 17 and would like to have one as a plinker. I am 60 years old and its been awhile since I`ve just went out plinking for the enjoyment of it. Best of luck to you. POW

I see what you mean about the Varner. It looks good and is not much more than the Savage in sale price. Best of luck. POW
