I am considering the purchase of a used 30-30 barrel with the intentions of having to rechamber either to the 30-30 AI or 309 JDJ.  It appears most of the used barrels are braked. Would I be better off with braked barrel or a non braked barrel?  Never have fired a 309 JDJ..but my line of thinking is that neither the 30-30 or 30-30 AI really need a braked barrel.  Any and all comments are appreciated.

You're right; neither need a brake but on the other hand a brake is OK.

the braked barrels are for sale....because the don't want the brake....maybe. ;)

i definately would not want the 30-30AI braked, and probably not the 309 unless i just had to for physical reasons. i've not shot the 309, but it has to have considerable recoil with 150-165gr max loads. still, i'd avoid a brake if possible and try it without one first. you can add one later if you must.

a brake is extremely loud. :o

don't forget other 30 cal options for your rechamber.....30 herret for example, which would actually be a better start.

the 30-30AI is a superb contender round. up to 2600fps with 125's, and pushin close to 2400fps with 150's in 14"-15" barrels. plenty for deer size game.

I do not like a brake. But there are times the application requires one. I have some bench toys that I like to shoot rifle scopes on. If not for the lighter cal. and the heavy barrels I would need a brake on them.

I have had sever great barrels but sold them because they were too loud and dont like to wear ear plugs when hunting.

First ,you don't say what length bbl. you are getting, 10,12,14" ??, Second you don't say but I'll guess hunting,  and you profile says NW Miss. so figure 75 Yds as a Max. shot unless you can hunt pipe lines ?
If it were me, I'ld go with AI and have the gun smith install one of the two or three chamber brakes like a Ross, JP or Harrell's, plus if your shots are over 100 yds I'ld mount either a Leupold EER or rifle scope, as to noise, the ear muffs that block sound at high levels work great.

I absolutely abhor muzzle brakes.  I'm tempted to think that it may be because most of my shooting is at the public shooting range and getting slapped by the muzzle blast and noise from the next bench .........but no.  Early this morning I walked to my box stand with my unbraked 10" 357 Herrett and realized I forgot my earplugs.  If I was shooting a braked barrel I would have had some more walking to do.

I recently bought an unbraked 375 JDJ barrel with full knowledge that if it proved to be too much recoil that I would sell it or load down for it before resorting to a brake.  Fortunately I think I will be able to handle it just fine.  Other than brakes being utterly unnecessary for me, I can't really put a finger on why I am so opposed to them.  Have I mentioned that I absolutely abhor muzzle brakes?  ;) ;D ;)

I can see an application for what David D. referred to, but my only pistol barrel with rifle scope is a .22rf and that will probably be the extent of it for me.

For a 30-30AI you will not need a brake at all. I have not shot the 309JDJ but it looks to have about the same velocity as the 30-30AI. I also HATE BRAKES. They are very loud and sometimes when hunting you don't have time to put in your ear plugs. I had that happen this year. I was hunting a logging road from a stand and a big 7 point buck just pops out of the cut over and keeps walking across the road. I grabbed my Contender 30-30AI 14" barrel pistol and got on him quickly and shot him before he got across the road. He already had his head and neck into the woods on the other side. It was not as loud as a 357 mag revolver. If I had a brake I would not have been able to hear for a week. By the way the 125 Nosler ballistic tip is a deer killing bullet. ;D

After 30 years in the factory I want to save what hearing I still have.  No matter what I shoot I use electronic ear muffs so I can hear what is going on around me and still be protected from the noise.  I have several braked barrels, and like them fine.  I don't have a 30-30 with a brake, mine is unbraked and doesn't need one.  I have a break on a 7-30 Waters and I think it is a pleasure to shoot.  I also have a braked 223 that I don't loose the sight picture in the scope, and a 45/70 that I have not shot yet.  So I guess it is an individual choice.

Of the cartridges you mention I personally think a brake is not needed. I have shot a 14" .30-30AI without a brake quite a bit and never had an issue with it.

In fact my youngest daughter when she was still in high school used my 14" .30-30 AI to take a nice Whitetail Doe at 200 yards. She never felt the gun go off she told me.

Braked or not, you need to have hearing protection on, even when hunting if you want to protect your hearing.
Most of my rigs are braked, but most of mine are higher capacity & pressure, and have rifle scopes on them.

NO BRAKE..and the 30-30 AI for the chambering..30-30 brass is cheap and everywhere..I can get the dies for $25.00.  and apparantly is all one needs to kill whitetails..I do have a .300 Whisper I have been playing with for years.  Never have shot at a creature with it though.

Good choice.  I used to have a barrel for the Contender.
Mine shot ragged holes at 100 yards-No brake.

     Yep...good choice.  I have both 30-30AI and 309 JDJ, and while I love my 309, I'd have to say that for deer only, the 30-30AI is very sufficient.  With bullet choice in the 150gr'er's or less, the AI will do anything the JDJ will do and burn less powder and maybe a little less recoil.  If I know I'm going to have a long range shot(I rarely do where I hunt deer here in SW VA)then I get out the 309 w/ 165BT's.  Anymore, unless I'm in a extremely good position with a good rest I'm just not comfortable shootin' at an animal that I have respect further than about 150yd anyway.
    BTW neither barrel is braked!  I guess I'm like Shortgun and Keith....I like my brakes on my F-150! ;D
