Lyman gpr weight
« on: December 12, 2010, 07:49:12 AM »
I am looking to buy a great plains rifle in 54 cal. I was told that a 54 is lighter than a 50, because  the outside diameter is the same but the bore is i larger on a 54 cal. I don't have the opportunity to compare them side by side. Any truth to this?

Lyman gives a generic weight for all GP rifles.  Seeing that all GP rifles use barrels with a measurement of 15/16 across the flats,  I would assume the .54 to be a little lighter in weight.  R/E the GPR Rifle, I used to own one.  They come in 1 in 66, and 1 in 32 twist.  You might want to look at the faster twist model if you intend to shoot conicals, or sabot type loads, as the slower twist model will only stabilize round balls.

Personally, I sold mine for a .54 Lyman Deerstalker model.  It weighs less, has a shorter barrel, and a stock with less drop and a modern recoil pad shotgun type butt.  Handles better, and has a 1-48 twist that works with round ball and conicals.
