223 Handi accuracy
« on: December 12, 2010, 05:08:25 PM »
I know this has been hashed out a few times but if you will humor me, I will think kind thoughts about
you all. ;D.  I want a 223 and have seen a few on Gun Broker.  Is the Handi, Varmit heavy barrel
capable of sub moa out of the box?
I have deceided that I am not an AR kind of guy and SHTF scenarios are not likely in rural Idaho so
a single shot is my preferance.  I shoot mostly targets and the occasional varmit.

Yes but not real likely. You will probably have to clean it and possibly work a little on the forend. If it is new there will probably be oil on the barrel latch(needs to be dry) Forend will probably need shimmed or sanded a little to relieve the pressure against the barrel. If new it will probably need 100 or so rounds put thru it to smooth out the rifleing.

Are they good shooters out of the box? most of the time. MOA with a little work.  ;)

I bought a used barrel from the classified's here.  No idea as to round count, but it looked great.  Mine is an older slower twist barrel.  My first range session with some of my Dad's old reloads from the mid 1980's yielded less than 1" groups.

It now has it's own furniture and will not be "changing barrels" from this combo.

So...yes they can be sub MOA.

Enjoy!

Another vote for usually, but might need some tuning, these things benefit greatly from handloaded ammo.
Others have fantastic luck right out of the box,

I guess I was one of the lucky ones, after a short barrel break in (60 rounds of FMJ), mine shot MOA with not much else work.  I did put a screw stop in teh barrel lug just to make sure I didn't over tighten the forearm but that' about it. (I had the fluted bull barrel)
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

A friend of mine has one. Don't really think it is a moa rifle though. Let's just say you won't miss many varmints out to a couple hunded yards. He told me he would sell it to me if i wanted it. Guess i will pass on that. Won't do a thing i can't do with my 22-250 or the 204.

It will shoot cheaper ammo than your rifles ;) What more of a reason do you need? If he does not belong to this site, the gun probably needs a little tweeking. Then again varmints at 200 yards is probably not to bad.

I pulled my extractor, 1 in 9 out of the box.  Put cheap glass on it, bore sighted it.  Sighted it in at 35 yards and exploded a pigeon at a little over 300 with cheap Russian 55 gr. ammo.  Do I like mine ???... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

When it comes down to terminology, my Handis don't know anything about clean.  They get cleaned when ya can't see down the bore or a bullet gets stuck in there.  I believe all mine shoot better a bit fouled.......well....maybe a lot fouled.  Ya gotta understand, the next bullet takes most of it out. ::)

Well I read this thread earlier today so I thought I'd take one of my .223's out. I took out my lightweight that I have scoped with an old 3X9 Tasco. At 100 yards I shot a .75" group off the back of the pickup truck.

I think i should have made my post a different way. 200 yards was the longest range we could shoot the rifle. We were shooting his hand loads ln it. I ask him what the load was and he said he just picked one that he liked  out of the manual and went with that. To me that is about as half assed as you can get. I load my own so if i did buy it i don't think bullets are any cheaper for that than the two i mentioned.

My 223 Ultra shoots <1/2" three shot groups at 100 yards.  I load 69 gr. Matchkings over 25.5 gr. of Varget.  I know the MatchKings are a little overkill for varmints but I like their consistency and range.  Knocks the poop out of coyotes.  I tweaked my scope rail, and forearm.  Probably up to about 250 rounds now.  I don't clean it much.
