feral hogs in Illinois
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:10:22 AM »
Hi, since Deer season is over for me, i was thinking about trying to find some feral hogs to hunt in Illinois. I found a couple of articles from this year stating that pigs can be found in far southern Illinois; Jackson, Union, Johnson, Pope, Massac and a couple of others. Also, it mentions a small town near Peoria called Smithfield. Does anyone out there have a knowledge about hunting them? I know that they are not a regulated species, so there's no season for  them and i would just need my small games license and my FOID to hunt them.... I am planning on using my contender. If anyone can direct me to a farmer wh might allow me get them off their land, i would appreciate it greatly! thanks!

That's a rather tough hunt to work out, without connections. There have been a few feral hogs in SW WI but hunting for the rank & file hunter is very slim. The few there are will most likely be on private land. If there are any, the landowner or his friends will want to deal with them. I'd look to coyote, rabbit, or squirrel hunting for an activity this Winter.

Actually you might find them around Marietta or in the bottoms around Lewistown...that is sort of southeast of Smithfield.

Some of these are hogs that escaped from locals.  Or, when the hog prices bottomed out a few years ago at $16/100lbs, a lot of guys were buying hogs from confinement operations, turning them loose in the bottoms and then hunting them.

If you get a chance to get into these parts, the best bet would be hit the local restaurants in the smaller towns in that area.  You might luck out and find the local farmers congregating and have an opportunity to make some connections.

Yep, I agree with Paints-n-cows. As I've said before there was a gent on or near the Spoon River who booked hog hunts around there. Had a prison guard buddy who took one down there. Ol' Toby took him with his AR-15{ex-Marine, you know}.

It is my understanding that as long as they are regulated by the IDNR, then they are fair game....but I would call Springfield or your local DNR officer just to be sure.
