Are you gonna shoot factory ammo or reload for it?

The Winchester 120 grain Positive Expansion Point is a dang fine factory load for whitetails.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I honestly killed more deer shooting 120 grn Positive Expanding Points thru my old 700 BDL than I can remember. I shoot both those and 120 grn Federal Fusions thru my Ultra Rifle. It does seem to like the Fusions a little better at no loss to performance on deer. They are devastating.

I've hunted but not killed any deer with my 25-06 Ultra, but when I got it several years ago, the ammo recommended was 120gr Rem Core-lokts, 115gr Federal Nosler Partitions and 117gr Hornady BTSP, they all shoot under 1" in mine, so take your pick, they're all good deer medicine.  ;)

I have three different 25cal rifles namely, a short action 700 Rem
in 25Hunter a wildcat caliber. Two: a custom 257 Roberts in a Handi 24" barrel, and a 25-06 Ruger#1 26". I shoot 100gr Bullets in all of them. In the 25-06 I use 100gr TSX bullets, in the 257 Roberts I use 100gr Speer Hot Core. The Rem likes the 100gr Hornady Interlock.

No deer or Antelope has ever walked away from any these bullets. All three rifles are super accurate  and shoot under 1/2" at 100. I say these bullets will do their job out to 300 and the TSX a bit better. Two years ago I toke an Antelope with the 100gr TSX a 385 yrds as per laser range finder.

I used to have a 257Wby that liked 100gr Nosler partition it too shot like crazy out as far as you could see on the prairie. As far as I am concerned the heavier bullets give away too much on the flat shooting 25's. Three years ago I toke a Moose with the 100gr Hot core with the 257 Roberts. Shot him behind the ear and he dropped like a rock.

I have only shot Hornady thus far, but they are bad medicine on whitetail.  The 117 gr., both spire points and ballistic tips, has never let me down and has provided numerous one-shot-drops.  I just bought some Federal 115 gr. so I will let you know how they work.

Stay with atleast 100 gr bullets for big game. Premiums not necessary unless extreams in range or game size. The 117 and and 120's make up the loins share of big game bullets for this excellent cartridge.

30ish years ago I had two .257Roberts rifles and they both worked perfectly with 100gr Sierra's(?) that I reloaded. My hunting ground was/is south central Wisconsin and even though I was sighted in for farther my long shot was 100yds. (offhand, one shot in front of the ear of an 8pt buck sniffin' the ground, bang flop).

Ok thanks guys. I read the 115 grain partition is really good. Has anyone tried fusion and have good results on deer. My dad asked if i was sure i wanted a handi rifle over a bolt action. And with no thinking i said handi rifel. With all the help, it made my decision. So i hope the 25-06 handi rifle ultra will be good.
Thanks everyone

I read the 115 grain partition is really good.

I used that bullet in my 257 Bob and really liked it.  But I would still say just get some Rem Core Locs.

I also have a 25-06 Handi I got just before deer season and only put a few rounds through it with a load I pulled from a manual.  Gonna do some serious load development with it this summer though!   ;D

Mine shot very well too, hovering about an inch. Better if I really took care. I only ever shot one factory load I remember. Win 120 power points. IIRC it was a 1.5 ish shooter. I did well with a stiff load of 4831 and a nosler 100 BT and a Hornady 117 RN bullet. I load 4350 and a 120 Speer Grand Slam load fir my brother. It shoots under one inch in the Mauser I made with him. But it didn't shoot as well from my Ultra.

Your gonna like yours too I know it!!merry Christmas,

I had a 25-06 Ultra several years ago and it shot very well.  I now have a Ruger No.1v in 25-06.  I've killed a bunch of deer with both the 115gr Ballistic Tip and the 117gr Gameking. Most dropped in their tracks, none ran out of sight.  The Ruger does seem to like 100gr bullets a little better but I haven't used any on game yet.  Too many rifles.

The 26" barrel isn't so much annoying as it is muzzle heavy compared to a 22" barreled Handi, but it's still about the same or shorter overall than a bolt rifle with a 22" barrel.

I have 6 Handi rifles in different calibers and they all seem to prefer Hornady or Winchester factory ammo over any of the others. In fact I just sighted in my new 25-06 Ultra today with the Hornady Superperformance SST 100 gr and it was driving tacks in a matter of just a few shots. None of my rifles like the  Federal premium ammo regardless of the bullet type. I have not tried the Remington ammo so I cannot comment on it's accuracy. Hope Santa drops that new rifle off in time for a couple of late season hunts. Merry Christmas!!!!

I don't have a handi in .25, but I have his necked up brother the .35 W handi as well as a Ruger M77 .25-06.  I love to shoot them both so much I just about have to play rock-paper-scisors with myself to figure out which one to take to the deer woods! :P  The .25-06 IMO is probably one of THE most versatile guns for North American game.  I have heard many stories of Elk, Moose and other large game taken by expert hunters and guides; proper bullet placement of course.  Flat shooting, plenty of K.O power, and is down-right pleasant to shoot.  Many, many coyotes and whitetail have fallen to mine.  Wow, I seem to gush over that little cartridge, but man will you be happy with it!!!!!

The best group I had was with factory 120 rem green box. Now if you get the rifle and end up reloading I would highly recomend the hornady 117gr interlock btsp with h4831sc at the published load. I was getting moa at 200yds with it seated just off the lands.
