Good rifle, I have a quigley in 45-70 and have never had so much fun shooting in my life.  I make al of my own bullets. I like the 405gr. Lyman bullet the best. I t will shoot at any distance you want.

  I load 405 and 485 grain bullets with 25 grns of 4759, very pleasant to shoot.      Garf. ;) ;)

MATTB, i got the malcom scope for my little sharps,but was not satisfied with it, adjustments were just not good enough for me on the 44-40, i could shoot better groups with the original tang sight. i am looking for a unertl 4x or 6x small tubed scope(3/4 inch) with better adjustments and recoil spring. on my big 74 sharps with the tang target sights,it will shoot just about any bullet into 4 inches or better at 200yds. eastbank.

I've owned a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps for just over a year now and can only say good things about it. Mine is the less expensive model sold by Cabela's and is in 45-70 with a 30" barrel. I mounted a globe front sight and the Dr. Goodwin-style Creedmore rear sight. Both are Pedersoli. Although an unusual design, the Goodwin sight has a true vernier scale for both windage and elevation, making adjustments very easy. It also locks solidly in position.

On Saturday, 8 January, our local club opened a new 350 yard range and we held our inaugural Buffalo Match. I shot against three competitors who were using Shiloh Sharps and others using Hi-Walls, Rolling Blocks etc. I won by a single target but would have scored better had I not shot the wrong turkey at 200 yards. That cost me two targets!

A couple of fellows found that the load they used at 200 meters in the past was inadequate for the big rams at 350 yards.

The quality of my Pedersoli seems to be excellent in all respects. It's not a Shiloh but then I didn't pay but 1/3 the cost of a Shiloh. I predict that you're going to love your Christmas present!  :)

Eastbank;

I love both the sharp and the scope and haven't had any problems with it yet. I haven't had a chance to shot it out to 200 yet but I do want to.

I am not surprised that you won if your's is as accurate as mine, I love the way mine shots and plan on using it hunting for hog this year.

What loads do y'all load do you use, I am running a 405gr. HBFN cast ahead on 16.2gr of Trailboss in a Rem case and Win. LR primer. I haven't put it over a chronograph yet but coming out of the 32" barrel I believe
that I am pushing about 1200fps.

Matt

Matt, I use a duplex load of 3.0 grains of WW-231 and 57.0 grains of WC-860, a military surplus powder. My bullets are either the SAECO 300 grain PB or RCBS 300 grain GC. Velocity is a flat 1600 fps and accuracy is excellent. Five shots at 100 yards measuring 1.25" is not uncommon. Recoil in the Pedersoli Sharps is gentle.... more a shove than a punch.

While I'm presently using WC-860, a substitute is WC-872 and can be used grain-for-grain. The only danger is if you drop a double charge of WW-231. I load each case with WW-231 and check them carefully before dropping the WC-860. In 20 years I've not had a problem.

Matt, let me add that WC-860 & 872 are ball powders and my load is compressed by the bullet. I use a slight crimp to keep it compressed for best ignition of the VERY slow WC-860.

I've successfully shot this load in an 1875 C. Sharps, the 1874 Pedersoli Sharps, a Winchester (Miroku) Hi-Wall and a Marlin 1895 Cowboy rifle. Accuracy has been excellent in all of them. The 1875 C. Sharps Business rifle has digested many thousands of my duplex load and is as tight today as when I bought it in October of 1991.
