What's your favorite load?
I just got one for hogs and deer.

I'm really liking what I've read about the Barnes bullets.

I'll have to admit that I don't have a favorite 458 SOCOM load yet.  I have several loads that would be quite acceptable on deer sized game up to 100 yards but I'm looking for 1 to 1.5 inch 100 yard 3 shot groups and I haven't gotten a load to do that well yet.  Perhaps part of my problem is that I've done most of my shooting with an EOTech sight; I'll have to try scoping it.

As for bullets, I think Barnes makes goods bullets but, unless they shoot better in your gun than others or unless you're in a "lead free" zone, I think they're a waste of money for things like hogs and deer.  Considering the heaviness and large diameter of .458 caliber bullets, you can use pretty much any bullet from Remington, Hornady, etc. at lower cost and with good results; after all, dead is dead.

When you get into shooting larger game with marginal cartridges, that's when you should be thinking Barnes bullets.  An example would be going after African plains game with a 22 Hornet.

I would just load the barnes for a hog round. I agree they are overkill for deer.
I havent started loading for mine yet...still trying to acquire the proper data.
I'm going to have to get some newer books because none of mine have the socom in them.   lol

I think it's unlikely you'll find any book with 458 SOCOM data in it.  If you PM me your e-mail address I'll forward what data I have with the understanding that most of it hasn't been tested by me.

After watching hog hunting forums for a while I have come to the concluion that people shooting 458 Socom kill lots of hogs with 1 shot. I see lots of head and neck shots with them.Looks good to me.  Chuck

I'll be a .458 SOCOM shooter soon.  My dealer just called to tell me that Rock River is shipping the two .458 uppers that I bought for my son and I for deer hunting here in Indiana. ;D

Fellas, looking at a.458 upper for my DPMS AP4. Has anyone done any real comparisons as far as like the .50 Beowulf with that funky rebated rim, or the other larger uppers? My understanding is that the .458 Socom is the ballistically superior cartridge. Is that a fact or not? I can only have the one, so any info, thoughts or ideas would be appreciated! Thanx all.

I have both a 50 beowulf and a 458 RRA Socom and both shoot great.....

The 50 beo is roughly MOA at 100 yards and am still working up my load for the 458....  Am casting for both using round nose bullets (had feeding problems with flat nose) gas checked......

Will post my load details when I get something I am happy with for the 458.....

You can find a wealth of info for the 458 Socom on these sites:
