Recieving change
« on: December 14, 2010, 07:12:58 AM »
Just wondering if anybody else has a pet peeve, with the way you recieve change. I don't mean the Obama change, although that p's me off too. I mean the way a clerk in a store hands back your change.
Just got back from a store, and for the hundredth time, I had the change handed back, with the paper money in hand first, and the change on top. Usually with the reciept under the folding money. That might work for a women, that stuffs everything in her purse. But, I like to put the change in my pocket, and the paper money in my wallet, and the reciept goes in the bag. And, I couldn't tell you how many times I've done a juggling act, trying not to drop quarters, nickels, and dimes and such, trying to seperate things before putting them away.
Anybody else have this pet peeve, or am I the only one? gypsyman
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I have found that one of the best inventions is the man's change purse. These are traditionally little plastic rubbery ovals with a slit down the top center. You just squeeze it open, then access your change. I used to have a lot of change piling up, and had to occasionally sort it and take it to the bank. Not anymore. Now the only change I have is in that little purse. They are getting hard to find. Last one's I bought were at a drug store and a hardware store.

I worked as a cashier back in the mid 60s.  I was trained to count the money back to the customer, change first then the bills.  The new NCR registers told me how much to give them back, which helped me to get the change and bills out of the drawer faster, but I still had to count it back to the customer.  In the 70s and 80s it was the younger kids right out of high school who did not count the change back.  I asked them to count it back to me and it so confussed them they would often loose it and get upset not knowing what I wanted.  They had never been taught how to count change back in school like I had been.

Then in 1990 I went to work as a cashier at the commassary on Elmendorf AFB.  The Boss came to me one day and informed me I was taking too long with each customer.  I was scanning the items fast, but I was taking too long counting the customer's change back to them.  She did not want me to do that, just count it as I took it out of the register, then hand it to them so they could clear the chedk stand and I could start on the next customer.  Speed and cranking out volumnes of customers was all that was important to her, and she actually put a repramand in my records for doing that.  The other cashiers (Who were all younger than me) asked me what I was doing when I counted the change back to the customers.  They did not have a clue as to how to count that way.  Many of my customers often complimented me for the way I counted their change back, saying I was the first cashier they had seen do that in years.

Today I count the money as the cashier removes it from the tray to assure I am getting the right amount back.  And I have caught a few cashiers not counting properly, who would have shorted me several times.  When you correct them it gets them so confussed they have to call the manager to straighten it out.  All because they can not count.  They are totally dependent on the machine telling them what to do.

I hate it when they give my change back with the change on top of the bills as well.  But that is the way management is telling them to do it.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I don't like the way they do things now, but a lot of it is just ignorance and the desire to move you through and get to the next person.

Round here that is a queer purse ( name given when queer ment odd ), Not many men here approve of them . Besides not much room in them . Now the leather ones in a sorta circle that opens like a cup gets some use. But I like it loose in my pocket , if I need a quater why pull out all of it ?  :D

It really messes with some them when lets say you buy an item for $2.48 and give them a $5 bill. The register tell them to give me back $2.52 but I then give them two pennies so I can get quarters back. It simply blows the mind of some of them.

Cashiers can't perform simple math at a register, bankruptcy is at an all time high, and the national deficit is climbing. Could it be we have a national math problem?  ;)

When you do this to a young person, I have seen many blank stares. Kids don't learn how do do simple math in their head anymore.
We would be in trouble if cash registers didn't show the amount of change a costumer is to get.

I didn't know there was such thing as a man purse. If I had one I would never let anyone see me with it. Pants pockets were made for holding coins.

I have a 16 year old grandson who is a straight A student, very bright, and couldn't read the hands on a clock cause it's not digital. Too many schools allow calculators, even require them not just for classes but tests too. The 3RS don't exist anymore. Math was always simple for me and I could figure out most anything I wanted, but am totally lost with the math today. They have complicated it so badly that no wonder America scores so low in testing worldwide. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I too, will stand there as long as it takes to put the bills in my wallet in order, then the change in my pocket, after I count it!!!
Then I look at the people in line behind me and say, if the cashier would count it out to me the way he/she is suppose to then I wouldn't have to take the time to do it here in front of you.

The other one that ticks me off is when the waitress at the restaurant asks if you want your change back.
YES, I WANT IT BACK.
If I want you to have it I will leave it on the table as the tip or I will tell you to keep it, but don't just assume I don't want it!
Most of the time when they ask that (if the change is much less than the tip I was going to leave) I will tell them to keep it, and then pick up the tip I had left on the table in front of them, making sure they see how much I had left.

Yup I hate the way they hand back my money too. It seems to me that the change to that way of doing things was almost every place at the same time. One would think that a sloppy way of doing things like this would evolve slowly, but it was almost overnight that this happened. And what they do is always the same, coins on top of the bills, so they fall all over the place if you twitch. I'm sure that this method must be being taught, but why?

When I do get change back, it really doesn't bother me.  I just put everything in my pocket - I'll sort it all at the end of the day.  It's mostly a problem of the past though.  I pretty much use my debit card exclusively these days.  On the (very) rare occasions that I need to use cash, I typically have a very specific need for it and try to withdraw exact change (if possible).  Last time I remember using cash for example was St. Patrick's Day of this year.  Some friends and I headed up to the "5 Points" area of Columbia, SC where they were celebrating.  Lots of street vendors and stuff, so I withdrew some cash for that as they typically don't have readers.  Can't remember using cash again since then.  There's a good chance that I won't need to again until that rolls back around :D.

Apparently to some extent counting money and change has always been a problem for some. Back in the early 80s I sold tires retail with a national chain. Our sales staff was myself, two other adults and one part time but very sharp teen. It was common for other departments to be at least several dollars off one way or the other at the end of each day. We received corporate recognition when during one three month period our department's total  accumulative error amount was seven cents!

one thing i do recommend is having the wallet out ready to pay before the cashier rings your talley..its something ive learned to do ..if theres a line o folks behind you , could be a mom that left the oldest sibling in charge of the baby ,
at home..also a cashier thats just trying to do thier job ,with aching feet an long hrs in..jmo.
ps ..do count your change though..some cashiers as well as customers ,have the check out scam refined to a skill..
some here will know well ,what i mean..

>:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Sorry, men can carry or wear a purse.  Your "possibles bag" is a purse.  So is your haversack. If you wear full highland dress, you know that sporran literally means purse. Heck, even your wallet is a purse. Ever hear the term "cut purse?"  Yep - a thief who would quietly slit the bottom of a mans purse to remove the money from it (or would cut the belt loops on it, but that was trickier).  Only in the past 100 years or so, maybe 150, have men not carried or worn a purse.

Back to the topic of change though, what I hate is having to convince a clerk or teller that they have given me too much back.  Once I argued with a bank teller that she had given me $100 too much.  I was this.close to saying "Fine, you're right" and walking out when the manager came over to see what the problem was.  Manager checked everything, went over it with both of us, told the teller to thank me for not letting her make a hundred dollar mistake.

It's almost 2011 folks...in today's fast paced society paying with cash or check is kinda old school.  Goes along with dial up modems and floppy disks.  I carry 2 things in my pocket, my driver's license and my debit card.  I have 2 bank accounts and put most of my pay check in one account, and my spending money in the other.  The debit card is only for the spending money.  Makes life a lot easier, and no coins to mess with.

OK I'll admit I carry a "purse" I dubbed it my "purse" some time ago. I found out that a buddy of mine also independently started carrying one that he also calls his purse. I started carrying one because sitting on my fat wallet was killing my back. So I got a bag to put it in. Nice thing about that is that now I can carry stuff that would take quite some time to gather up and often gets forgotten all in one place. Cell phone and chargers, 6 shooter, gloves, pen and paper, lighter, bug juice, flashlight, tape measure, bottle of H2O, some granola, and bilfold all in one handy bag. I first started using a fabric fishing tackle bag, but it wasn't a handy shape. Now I have a small tool bag, better shape, handy zipper, and best of all it says Craftsman prominately on the side.

My purse doesn't go on the store with me, it stays in the pickup. One downside is I often forget to grab my wallet out before going into the store, I'm getting better though.
