7600 in .25-06
« on: December 14, 2010, 09:15:48 AM »
I bought this rifle about 4 years ago and it has been in the box since then.  My other .25-06 (700 bolt gun) is in the shop for a new extractor, so I decided to pull this one out of the shadows and get it ready to shoot and hunt.  It will be the first 7600 (or 760) that I have personally owned and used.  But I'm ready to hit the range with it now.  Here is a photo of the ole gal:

Assuming it shoots good, I'll post some targets here.  If it doesn't I'll post them anyway.  I'm confident it will shoot because every one of them that I have been personally involved with shot very well (a 6mm Remington and two .30-06).

Very nice looking rifle TLARbb!
If it shoots as good as it looks I know you will be happy.
Was that one of the Grice's exclusive rifles?

GOOD SHOOTING!

Yes, it was a Grice limited edition.  The date codes give Sept. 2004 as mfg date as close as I can tell.

I've made a few comments in this subforum about how I thought these rifles were so good, but that was based on rifles I was associated with and not rifles I personally owned and shot.  I picked this up in 2006, but it's been in the box for 4 years (actually 6, but only 4 at my house).  I thought it was about time I started walking the walk, if I am going to talk the talk.

Another thing that has caused me to want to do this is that I have had a change of heart about keeping a rifle unfired.  If I bought it to give me pleasure, it can best do that in the field rather than in the box.  So, it is now out of the box and in the gun rack.  I was hoping to get to the range with it tomorrow, but some unexpected business requirements came up this afternoon that will take precedence.  After I get it sighted, I plan to use it on any more hunting that I do this fall.  I'm not as die hard of a hunter as I was 15 years ago, but I still like to get out there some and be close to nature; it's very therapeutic.  And I can't take this thing with me when I leave here, so I'm going to use it.  :D

I shot this rifle today, but I must say that more shooting is going to be needed to determine if it's going to be a real shooter or not.  I used most of my available rounds sighting at short range then fine tuning at 100.  The 120 gr corelocts I bought in the late 80's were dismal.  I had some 100 speer hollow point handloads with me and it liked those a lot better, but I didn't have enough of them to try to shoot groups.  I am confident that this rifle can shoot well, I just have to break it in some.  AND get that dang trigger group worked on, what a pain it was to deal with - very long and gritty and heavy.  Not conducive to fine shooting at all.  It has got to go to a trigger doctor for sure.

Anyway, it has been fired and I'm liking the potential, even though it hasn't been realized as yet.  It is a bit of a chore (compared to my bolt guns) to cycle on the bench.  But a day at the range is always fun.  There was only two other guys out today.  One on the 200,300,400 yard range and the other on on the pistol range.  I had the 100yd centerfire range to myself.  I did get my Model 7 .243 shooting to POA and it did quite well with the new 85gr Sierra HPBTs I had loaded for it.

Beautiful rifle I'm sure it will settle down after you get a few rounds through it, the triggers are pretty rough though.
