Lots of old telephones for sale cheap at garage sales etc. Could a guy wire them up into an intercom system for around the farm?

If you wire two phones up in series and put a single d battery in the series loop as well you can talk from one phone to the other. You will not be able to get them to ring though. That gets more complicated. GMRS/FRS radios are more expensive but no wire or central switch required.

That's kind of what I remember as a kid. I expect that it may work even better if you used just the handsets.
