Nothing Runs like a Chineese Deere
« on: December 15, 2010, 02:31:31 AM »
Just when I was upset with Polaris for moving to Mexico, I read this about the new John Deere Gator....in OUtdoor Life  magazine on-line.

John Deere Gator XUV 825i
Joining the faster, more performance-oriented crowd, John Deere recently unleashed its hottest Gator utility vehicle to date. Designed for the hunting, fishing and sports driver, the 2011 XUV 825i is a significant departure from past vehicles, which have had a more agricultural bent.

This Deere is quick off the line, boasting a stout 50 horses delivered by an 815cc, liquid-cooled, inline 3-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and EFI. The motor can deliver a serious dose of low-end torque while taking on steep grades, even with heavy payloads. Built by the Chinese auto manufacturer Chery International, the engine reaches a top speed of 44 mph.

The new front and rear independent suspension system is smooth, offers less body roll and allows improved side-hill stability with or without cargo. A new disc braking system allows for less fading on steep hills. The unit can haul 1,400 pounds or tow 1,500. The composite cargo box has removable sides. (johndeere.com)

Specs:
Dry Weight: 1,630 lb.
Passengers: 2
Ground Clearance: 11 in.
Towing Capacity: 1,500 lb.
Transmission: CVT Auto
Engine: DOHC, 3-cylinder in-line, 12 valve, EFI, liquid-cooled
Displacement: 812cc
Price: $11,200

surely not defending them but i guess a motor made in another country is better then a company that cans all its workers and starts making there whole line in another country.

After having one after another Chinese bolt strip out as I tightened them, I told myself to be very leery of anything made there. We can't seem to do much that's right in the US any more, but years ago when we could, things like the Society of American Engineers were what made us amongst the best in the world.

Lloyd, good point.  I am disappointed to find that an American Icon company (at least in my mind) like John Deere installs in their new monster Gator a chineese motor.  When did they forget how to produce their own machinery?  Maybe they have been doing that for years and I have just been uninformed.  I can say that I was really interersted in the new Gator, but not now. If I buy a Japaneese made buggy, I am at least well aware that it is Japaneese.
RDmallory.  yes, very ouch!   Most of the new side by sides are expensive.  Apparently the Chineese motor didn't bring the price down much.

All of their under 60-70 or so hp tractors have been made in Japan for many years. My JD 790 tractor is made in Japan.

GB, I should not be surprised, but I am still disappointed.  Japaneese motors, better than Chineese?  Most likely, but still John Deere?  Bummer.

So what is the big difference in chinese and jap?  Both of my deeres were yanmars. I think. My mtd snow blower has a chinese engine. Had it in for some work on it yesterday. When it was brought back yesterday afternoon the guy told me that was the hardest piece of equipment (junk) to work on that he has seen in his 20 years of being in business.

I know this is a old post, but the chinese are what's killing our country. The Japs might have bombed Pearl Harbor but at least they apologized and at least some Jap products are made in the U.S.A. (love it or leave it). We have a Toyota truck plant in the neighboring city and they employ thousands of Americans.

Japanese labor is on par with us as far as pay.  Chinese are way cheaper on labor.  Chinese are not as well educated either.

A lot of Jap engines are built in China. They also source out car parts from there.they are no different from US Companys that source out to the cheapest supplier.

A couple of points...Deere started selling the smaller Yanmar tractors back in 1977...I taught the first service school on these tractors and they were very well made...They ended up with 4 models 650, 750, 850 and 950...Engine HP was between 14-28 hp on these models...

Now, how did it come about that one of the oldest Companies in the world came to sell tractors that were made in Japan??? btw...Yanmar made the entire tractor not just the motors...

Japan was a growing market for farm and industrial equipment back in the early 70s so Deere wanted to do business over there...Only problem, you can't do business in Japan, you have to go through a Japaneese company to do business...

Deere partnered with Yanmar to market it's products in Japan, in the process they found out that Yanmar was producing smaller diesel tractors...Deere was actually on the drawing board and planning to move into this market as they felt a need for these to sell to sundown farmers...

It ended up being a Win/Win  situation...Deere had an in to the growing Japanese market and didn't have to tie up resources in developing these compact tractors...

Nothing runs like a jap deer nothing stops one like a Jap Browning  ;D

My New Holland has a Jap engine etc same as kubota. Maybe all three JD, NH and K are made in same factory. Massy ferguson was made in India . Ford Backhoes were made in England for years.
Face it Unions, EPA and OSHA have crippled American industry. Add the fact we spend with out regard to haveing to pay it back its easy to see why off shore products are kicking our butts. And we keep buying them on credit .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Japs are ten times the engineers than Chinese. The Chicoms can't make a decent screw driver. The japs are darn good.

On a related note; Recently I began to look for a coffee mug that would take lots of abuse at the ranch, working, etc.. I liked the looks of the stainless steel Stanley and Thermos brands. Of course a look at the bottom of the mugs showed me that they are made in China.

For a look at some companies that still make things in the USA, go here:
http://www.americansworking.com/
Not sure how up to date the info is, but if you prefer to do business here at home with products made in the USA, this might be a good place to start shopping.

I just read this thread and would like to comment on a few things.

Deere severed their tractor building partnership with Yanmar some time ago, Yanmar is now building tractors for Cub Cadet and a couple others AND Yanmar is now AGAIN starting to sell in the USA under their OWN name.

As for New Holland compacts, yes they are Japanease, but they are NOT the same as Kubota in any way.  They are made by Shinbaru and i'm told that soon that will change, (maybe already has ? ) and they will be made by ?? .

As for Deere, they bought a car company in China, and are also building a factory in China.  Much of their parts are now made in the china car factory, they also build some of their loaders in china. (the rest are now build in Mexico)

As for Deere compacts and some of their mid size tractors:  Compacts are put together from parts from all over, includeing china, japan, india and the US.  A few of their tractors are completely made in India too.  The mid size tractors are made in Europe and their biggest tractors are made in the US.

There are now only two bigger tractor companys that are based in the USA, Deere and AGCO...

AGCO owns many companys, Massey, Fendt, AGCO, Valtra, Gleaner and MANY others...

  DM
