Which 30-06 to get?

My old, well used Win M70 30-06 is my favorite rifle, and it's like an old friend.

Years ago the action was bedded (and the barrel free floated), had the trigger adjusted and it will shoot 3/4" or better groups all day long.

As far as a new good shooting lower cost 30-06 it's hard to go wrong with either a Marlin or Savage.

Friend of mine purchased one of the Marlin XL 30-06 rifles and it is very accurate, right out of the box.  The Savage models are also very accurate.

Since I didn't see it. I put in for the mossberg 100 atr . 260.00 at wal mart in 30 06. The one I have is three shots covered with a dime at 100yds seirra game king 165gr but is good with just about any thing I stick in it. Has a nice short throat not 4 miles long like my remington.  Barrel dosen't heat up fast don't know why.

walmart up here has cammo stocked 700 rem adls for $440 with a cheap 3x9 scope on them. Hard to beat that price for a 700.

I own 1 rifle besides .22`s , I bought it used for $275 & its a model 70 ranger(guy said it only had 1 box thru it). My buddy has the same rifle & gave me some hand loaded 180 core loks, &  with a tasco 3x9 world class scope it will do 3/4 in at 100 if I do my part. Its a plain Jane but I just like to hunt & it works great. Mike

Rifles i'm not going to say any special one but stay away from the cheap rifle scope packages. Tried to sight in 2 new ones and neither scope made it thru the sighting in process. Spend a little more for a little better scope and you will be much better off. Happy Hunting  ED K

That is a good buy. You could take the scope & rings off & sell them for $50.00 or so & have under $400.00 in a new M700.

I'm thinking someday I may get to go elk hunting.  I like walnut, but stainless/synthetic is probably the smart thing.  I'm pretty set on 30-06 since there is a lot of different ammo available.

It's been a while since you last posted here.  If your still looking, here's my 2 cents:

1)  A 30-06 is a GREAT choice!!!

2)  But don't try to do all/everything with just one rifle.  Plan this rifle to be one of 2 or 3 even if your budget says it may be awhile before you can add a second.

3)  I don't own a stainlees steel rifle and probably never will - I just learned to take care of the finish on the ones I have.

4) Get the best value for your 30-06.  A bolt action rifle probably offers the best/lowest cost out-of-the-box accuray.

5) Low end price - Look at Stevens, Savage and Rem ADL or a used rifle.

6) Mid-range price - Look at Rem M700 CDL

7) For a bit more - Look at the new Winchester Super Grade

After reading all of the responses to your question I would like to make a suggestion. Go to a good gun store and handle as many rifles as the proprieter will permit. I am sure you will find one that wants to go home with you. All of the opinions that have been expressed are exactly that,OPINIONS. Other than my previous suggestion the only thing I could say further would be "WHAT I PREFER". I don't know whether my preferences are "better" than someone else's but they are mine and I am happy with them.
I am sure that ,if you take my suggestion, one of those rifles will jump into your hands.
