Yugo M-48A

Saw one of these at Pawn shop today. Thinking of picking it up at about $195. It looks like not issued. numbers match on wood and metal. No extras like Bayo.
Is this a decent price?
Any pitfalls I should lookout for?

offer 125 and dicker from there pawn shop prices are ASKING prices and usually have a lot of room in them.

Thanks for the comment on bartering torpedoman. I am still wondering where is the fair value at, so as not to be straying too far from that? Am I to understand that 195 would bee too high? It seems to be about 1/2 of what mitchels are asking. Some things on net I found from 2-3 years ago seemed to hint that 150-200 was not out of line then. I dont see much of anything for less than 300 on the gun Auction sites. Not saying that 195 is asking price, just trying to find a decent limit I should stay under.

Offer $175 and see what he says.  At even $195 a good condition matching numbered rifle is a good buy.

One thing I learned about my Yugo is that it has stamped floorplate AND trigger guard which makes it a M-48B.  This even though the receiver is marked M-48A like all the rest.  Doesn't matter to me really, but may be another bargaining tool on your side if the one you're looking at is a B also.

The M48 has a milled trigger guard and floorplate, the M48A uses a stamped one. Otherwise there is no difference twixt the two and both are great buys.

Yep, and a genuine "A" is probably worth a little more than a "B" because the B was never a Yugo service rifle.  The M48-B began production in 1956 and were built for export.  Again, look for milled vs stamped trigger guard to know if it is an "A".

And the export rifles, which were originally ordered by Egypt, did not have a crest.

Not all export rifles were ordered for Egypt, but you are correct that the ones that were for Egypt did not have the crest or any other mark besides serial number.  That way both countries could maintain "plausable deniability" as to their origin.

This stuff is fascinating isn't it?  No wonder we got bit by the "bug"!!

A few years back they were offering these and i happen to pick one up.  I found mine in a pawn shop with the orginal box still full of cosmoline and it had a small box with it full of accessories.  Like the bayonet, sling ect.  My point is if it has no accessories with it haggle the price even lower.  Tell him its worth even less without the orginal serial numbered bayonet plus the orginal sling too. If its been cleaned and shot its even less money to a collector so lay the BS on him. Offer him $125 and when he refuses look at other guns.  Then i would walk out and come back another day and haggle again.  Play the game and get it cheap. With things really slow business wise and next month it will be much slower i'd work my way up to $150 tops for it.  Even wait till the middle of january to haggle too.  I waited till the pawn shop was very slow to buy guns so i could haggle.

That reminds me mine is still in the safe unshot to this day, i don't think i even cleaned it yet.  I also haggle for new cars too.
