Shipping costs
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:35:21 PM »
Question for you folks you buy, sell and trade muzzleloaders online. I am just starting to look and attempt to make some purchases online and was working on a deal for a rifle with a lady who was selling a TC sidelock rifle for her Dad. Had a couple pics of the rifle which did not look to bad and had a five day inspection and return. She could not tell me anything about the condition of the bore which made me a bit nervous. I offered $25.00 less than they were asking with them also paying the $20.00 shipping per there quote. If I found the bore to be in bad condition I offered pay return shipping which seemed fair to me. They responded wanting me to pay shipping both ways if I found the bore to be in bad condition. Is that the usual practice for these transactions? Looking at the situation I felt that I could end up out $40.00 with nothing to show for it. What is the norm or is there one?

that's pretty normal and pretty cheap. a lot of them-especially on the auction sites-want $40.00 to ship with the same "guarantee". trick is to deal with people you know and trust if possible. otherwise, as the carnies say "ya pays yer nickel and ya takes yer chance". good luck and have a good'en, bubba.

FWIW, most muzzleloaders with a 28" octagon barrel will weight in @ about 9lbs, +/-, B 4 packaging - or almost 15lbs ready 2 go.

While I break mine down & mail in a USPS delta-shaped shipping tube, it's STILL going to cost at LEAST $25 w/o insurance or delivery confirmation.
Cross-country shipping is very much more expensive, especially crossing the Rocky Mountains, than to the state next door.

Check with a shipper - cite the weight AND the parcel's length & width (which enters into the shipping rate calculation).

Who should bear whatever shipping cost is an issue for negotiation between every buyer and/or seller - and can all be different in each case.
IOW, YMMV.

What's the offer for the gun? If ya don't mind tellin,
I've bought and sold good T/C's and others for around $200, shipping USPS Priority w/insurance around $25-30
I ask the cost because that and the shipping total can make or break a deal,, ???
Pretty standard for the buyer to pay shipping if the cost is 175,,I'll pay the shipping for 200,,,get it?

No sence hagglein',,the price is right or it ain't.

Gun was listed for $300.00 + $20.00 for shipping. I offered $275.00 shipped to my door and would pay return shipping if I found the bore to be rough. They wanted me to pay shipping both ways if not satisfied. They could not give me any idea what the bore was like.

[They could not give me any idea what the bore was like.]

If that's the case, I wouldn't pay one thin dime more than $200 (shipped) for an unseen piece - then wouldn't have to think about returning it, since pristine replacment/takeoff barrels are all over the web for $60-$90.
(I won a GB auction for a like-new .54 T/C barrel, complete with sights & ramrod, last year for $70)

If you have doubts, don't do it.  Simple as that.

Yes I got the Cabelas but still am determined to have a left handed TC Renegade. So much so that this evening I purchased most of a lefty 50 cal Renegade on ebay that someone was parting out but looks to be in great shape. Unfortunatly due to a computer lock up and had to be rebooted I did not get the lock! Dang it! I have the stock complete with fittings, complete barrel with all the fittings and trigger assembley, trigger guard and tang. Now to find a TC lefty lock! Danged computer glitch!

I am surprised they gave you a 5 day inspection. When I sell something the sale is final, no return and I expect the same when I buy something. Years ago I sold a rifle to a guy who didn't like it and returned it. Turned out he needed some parts from the lock and trigger. There I was stuck. I know others that had the same happen with radio equipment.
So if you get an inspection period I would suspect they must be selling honestly or they wouldn't offer it.

IMO the fair price for a muzzleloader is geographical much more so than with modern firearms.   In some areas of the country they are common as nails and just as cheap to buy, while in other areas quite scarce and so much more expensive.   Supply and demand.     So where a seller lives or bought the rifle from and where a buyer is plays a part in what each consider fair for the same rifle.    IOW, a TC Hawken available for $200 in my neck of the woods just doesn't exist unless it is a worthless pile of junk.

I agree with bub, they wouldn't offer the 5 day inspection if they didn't think the rifle would match their description of it.   The more honest and complete a description is in an ad, with good pictures, the less the chance of both parties not having the same opinions on the rifles condition.   Communication, simple as that until both parties are on the same page, and have established a level of trust in each other.    The seller puts in a lot of time and effort to prep an item, take pictures, research and write an ad to offer a saleable item for a fair price.   A serious buyer should not be against also investing a little time as well.   A simple phone call is a great tool to get to that point.    More information will change hands than was written in the ad, a persons ethics can be easily learned from the call(s) and you just might meet a like minded person that will become a friend and not just somebody that you did business with once.    IMO if a seller is honest with his description he doesn't need to offer the 5 day return, ever.   If he wants to offer the return to back up that he is trying to be honest that's fine, but he doesn't also need to pay for the return if the rifle is as he said it was WHEN HE SHIPPED IT.     There are just as many scam buyers as there are scam seller out there.    Again, being on the same page BEFORE a commit to sell/buy will eliminate the problems later, or the need to return something.   And with the trade count that Bill has provided here on GBO for sellers and buyers, you have one more tool to get a good feel for the other party.    I have bought and sold on GBO and at many other places on-line for almost 20 years, and with almost zero problems anmd thousands of items.   I have also never offered a return policy, and have never had anyone request it FWIW.   And it was easy, I just did the above and earned the reputation of being an honest seller and buyer.

l could not get any kind of response on bore condition from the seller who was the guys daughter and did not know for sure if it was traditional or inline. Any seller should be able to check the bore with a light or have someone do it for them. Like I said I was more than willing to pay the return shipping but did not expect to get dunned for shipping to me if the product was flawed. That was fair to me and the seller I thought and still think it would have been.
As it turned out I purchased a rifle from someone on GBO who contacted me. At least two phone calls and several emails and I was assured that the bore and rifle was good. Checked the guys feedback and looked good. Only a couple negatives in almost a hundred sales. Got the rifle and the bore is pitted the first three to four inches. Used fine steel wool and oil followed by JB borepaste to start seeing clean patches. Oiled it good and only hope it shoots good. If not I will have it bored to a larger caliber. I sent the seller emails and have had no response from him before I even tried to clean the bore. Really had no intent to return the rifle just wanted to know why the difference in what I was told and what I recieved.
So it seems to me either way one takes there chances. Maybe good or maybe bad!

I'd suggest that you leave an appropriate feedback on his trade count, especially if he assured you the bore was good.    They can be a very helpful tool, but only if folks post both good and bad dealings with fellow members on GBO.  All too often folks don't bother with the bad ones - fear of reprisal I guess.  But if a description is false then the item was not represented honestly, simple as that, and that makes that seller a questionable one no matter how many positive trade counts he has.

I appreciate that GBO Admin gave us that extra tool to help make transactions go smoother, and with happy campers on both sides.   Sure it's not perfect, but its better than not having it.   Just my opinion.
