Very good article from the pilot's point of view. I sure am glad this plane was on our side! It was so far ahead of its time.

Excellent Article. I had read other accounts in the AOPA mag on the black bird and even a blow by blow account on bringing the space shuttle in.

I enjoyed your link greatly, Thanks

Great link on the Blackbird!
I have read several pieces on this great plane, but this was the best! He talks about the SR71 as if it's a part of him.
What an aviation masterpiece.

The part about the seams leaking fuel at rest, blew my mind.Never thought about the plane having expansion joints to compensate for the problems caused by the heat created from the friction at these speeds.

Great story! The only SR-71 I have seen was at the Pima Air Museum in Tuscon, AZ. It looks fast just sitting there! Pima is a great Air museum, if you ever get the chance go! The other plane that is fast just sitting there, for me anyway was the F-104, I didn't know they were designed by the same gent. yep, airplanes I like!

Use to watch the SR71's take off and land at Beale AFB/ You could always tell when they were gonna take off as 2 fuel tankers would fly out an hour or so before they left. They still have the U-2 their, and they play a lot of touch and go.
