Country Music Singers
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:55:52 AM »

I'm a music lover, and love just about all styles..........."Except Rap" I don't consider it music. Some of the younger members may disagree :o

One of my favorite country singers is a Texan! Gene Watson. Even at his age, he can still out sing most new comers.
Just listen to the words and the delivery of " A one sided conversation, with a narrow minded wall! True country poetry, sung by a master. Who are some of your favorite singers? Country or other.

I was afraid you said "Country Rap". That would have been too horrible to contemplate.

Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, of course.

But I give big credit to the massively talented Roy Clark, who could do anything on a stage and do it well. I think he's still performing regularly, but maybe semi-retired. Lots of credit to Chet Atkins too for doing so much to establish Nashville as the music city.

Check out Junior Brown on youtube. Gee-tar player extraordinaire. Invented his own instrument that's a combination steel guitar and Fender electric.

I'm not the biggest fan of Country Music, but I'd sure pay to see John Anderson or Alison Krauss. For her 16th birthday, I treated my daughter and her best friend to a Tim McGraw concert at the Michigan State Fair in Escanaba back in the day, and I was really enjoying the music until the girls decided to charge the stage to get closer to Tim McGraw.  ;D Thought Security was going to throw us out of the joint for awhile, but they were pretty understanding about the whole thing. ;)

My dad went to school with Patsy, dated her some and got her very first paying singing job for her at $5.00 an hour for 5 hours a night on Fri, Sat nights at a friends dance hall he knew.
That was BIG money back then for an unknown.

Patsy was my Dads favorite female singer, I have several of her tapes, a beautiful voice. To watch her on stage was a real treat. It was just like all she had to do was open her mouth and that beautiful voice would fill the room without any effort on her part. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

No doubt G Jones will go down as the greatest male country singer ever, and Patsy C. the best female singer.
Their voices are so unique and the delivery the best.

Gene Watson is one of the greats, sure enough.....
He's on my list along with:

Willie Neslon
Hank Snow
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash
Johnny Horton
Marty Robbins
Merle Haggard
Clint Black
Buck Owens
Jim Ed Brown
Kieth Whitley
Don Ried (Statler Brothers)
Ricky Skaggs
Brad Paisley
Darius Rucker
Charlie Pride

Patsy Cline
Allison Krauss
Emmylou Harris, who I enjoy regardless of what genre she's singing...
Linda Ronstadt, when she sings country songs....  Heck, I like her when she sings ANYTHING
Paulette Carlson from the band Highway 101 did it for me back in the day.
So did Suzy Boggus.  Anybody remember her?  I wonder what happened to her because she was all over the radio back in the early '90s.
Oh, and one little mentioned but none the less major talent... ROSE MADDOX!
June Carter  (I should add her sisters, too.  When I think of singing angels, I think of them -probably because I used to watch the Johnny Cash T.V. Show as a kid)
Maybelle Carter

Porter Wagoner with Dolly Parton
Dolly Paton with Porter Wagoner

And a bunch more that I could list......

I grew up knowing many of the Opry Stars, and others that were not members of the Opry.  Lived down the road from George and Tammy.  Knew Roy Orbison and his wife before she got killed.  Knew Johnny Cash and June Carter.  Red Foley had a crush on the local Pharmacist, so when I dropped in there to have a soda Red was always there sitting at the soda fountain trying to woo her.  I met many Country Artist when I worked at Monument records as a studio muscian, and when I worked at the Carrosell club in Nashville, not far from the old Rhyman.  I played Base Fiddle on the Bobby Lord show every afternoon weekdays as a muscian while in high school.  Bobby had differant artist every day.  Some of my favorites were Ferlan Huskey(and his charector Simon Crumb), George Morgan, Marty Robbins, Dale Reeves, Hank Snow, Porter Waggoner, Roy Accuff, Jeanie C Riley, Jeanie Shepard, Skeeter Davis, and Roy Clark.  Of course Johnny Cash, June Carter and Mother Maybelle and the Carter Family, GrandPa Jones and Remonia, Waylan, Conway Twitty, and Loretta Lynn,  String Bean, Lester and Oscar,  Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Bobby Lord, Little Jimmy Dickens, Jimmy Dean, and Chet Atkins.  A guy called Brother Lonzo played a pretty mean Dobro.    Always wanted to meet Tex Ritter, but never got the chance.

My folks used to drag me to the Opry, two or three times a month.  My Dad played Mandolin and Guitar, with one of the Blue Grass groups for a number of years.  I grew up hating those hard wooden seats in the Rhyman.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I think i have every record Hank Snow ever made. He was my favorite. When my mother passed away i grabbed her 33 records. I think they are older than me. I just went through them and found one by Del Reeves. The price tag is still on it.  $1.57. I use to love it when she played those records. I don't listen to the new stuff. To me it isn't country.

My favorite Gene Watson song is, "Forteen Carat Mind". But I like them all.

I like most of the ones mentioned here, so instead of making a redundant list of my own I will just say,

i know that rap is not a favorite here but did you ever stop to realize that rap style music had astart in country music? look at "hot rod lincoln" in the late 60's or early 70's. or think about red sovine and hits like "giddy up go daddy" or that "phantom 409" i think it was called. other trucker song artists used that style. sort of a talk/sing style with rhyming lines in verse. convoy songs come to mind and the latest ones i can think of that are somewhat the same are like the one where buddy catches a ride to music row with the ghost of hank williams. corb lund does use spoken word within song a fair bit. similarities to think about. every generation trys to find some new ground

I pretty much like everyone who has been mentioned and more.  There are a lot who have passed on who are timeless.  By the way, I believe Gene Watson has assumed room temperature, but I might be wrong.

Now here's a shocker from a person (my self), who is almost exclusively a country western fan.  Kidd Rock has a song that I think would make a great theme song for a political campaign.  I'm not sure of the title, but it might be "Born Free in America", or something along that line.  I think he sang it at the CMA awards show.  It sort of put me in mind of a Bob Seger type song.  Bob Seger (sp) is one of the few non-country singers that I really like--at least some of his stuff.  Night Moves, Old Time Rock and Roll, Into the Wind and others were great.

WOW. Those names bring back a lot of great memories, and we can't forget Tennessee Ernie Ford. Although the Statlers are my all time favorite group I never knew tha Don Reid ever gave solo performances. Does anybody remember a song that he sang???? We went to the old Opry in the late 60s. A singer I always liked was Marion Worth but I'd never seen her. From the time she came on stage til she left she seemed to have such a haughty, better than you attitude. I was disappointed in her and never saw her in the same light again. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Don't forget these Country Rap greats;
"Convoy", by C W McCall
"Boy Named Sue", by Johnny Cash

Seems like Porter Wagonner had a few too. Just off the top of my head.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today", by Jones is about half rap song.

OOOH! That just seemed sinful to refer to that classic as rap. Sacrilegious!!.........I'm going to repent of that right now!!   ;D
