Or Patty Loveless or Chystal Gale or George and Lorrie Morgan.

Johnny Rodriguez, Kitty Wells, Dottie and Shelly West, Kathy Mattea

HEH, you better repent, and RIGHT NOW. Using the term rap in the same sentence as those country greats is terrible. Close your eyes, and try to picture them onstage with the current rap crappers. Ugggghhhh.

A huge difference in all of the real artists we have mentioned compared to those of today is the way they dress and act. The singers of old had pride in the way they presented themselves and dressed, not like most of the slobs today. T shirts, holes in pants, slovenly looking. YEP, big difference. POWDERMAN.

Been listening to hillbilly ( I call it that to differentiate it from "Country") for nearly 70 years. First song I remember was Pistol Packin Mama.
There have been five greats. If they didn't do it, it probably didn't need doin:
Jimmie Rodgers
Bob Wills
Ernest Tubb
Hank Williams
Lefty Frizzell

Been a several near greats too:
Hank Thompson
Merle
Moon Mullican
Webb Pierce

Sad, but Merle may be the last really good one.

I live just outside of Branson so I get to see a lot of them. Not just in the shows but shopping, and restaraunts, doing just every day stuff. Pretty cool.

Back when I was in high school, mid 60s, Cowboy Copas stopped in our town. he went to a local bar for a few drinks. He parked his caddy on the street, a convertable. Big ol horns for a hood ornament that reached all the way accross. Silver dollars imbedded all throughout the seats, and the door handles were six shooters. Nobody bothered his car or even tried to take anything from it. POWDERMAN.

Hey Swede, I discovered Hank III a few years ago and enjoy his first two albums, jsut can't find the rest! I have a couple of albums by Wayne "The Train" Hancock who wrote a few songs Hank covers on the first album. He's old time rockabilly for the 21st century. Also like Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (collectively known as The Flatlanders), and the MAN, Robert Earl Keen! I love tormenting my wife by singing "Road Goes On Forever" and substituting our names for Sonny and Sherry in the song. Nothing brings on a dirty look quicker than "Lindsey was a waitress in the only joint in town, she had a reputation as a girl who'd been around..."!

Country Music is/always has been about feelings.
Each artist represents/presents their feelings in every song----see the number of songs covered by different artist, as a statement of their feelings.
Hear Willie sing "Crazy" as contrasted to others---and Willie wrote the song.
I don't get feelings from much of today's artist---a few, not many.
"Waughbash Cannonball" may be the very best example of this---Another is "Bird of Paradice", this has been presented as a song and as a gospel.
Ernest Tubbs has been overlooked here---I am glad to see Hank Thompson thought of--he is, pehaps, the most overlooked "great" talent in this industry.
Possum is feelings personified.

Most folks don't recognize the contributions of the great singers and writers that have come out of this great waistland of Central Texas---truely the heart of Honky Tonk country.
I say that God made central Texas for one sole purpose--to hold the world together---there is noting else there that it is good for.

Talking about Texas reminds me of Jerry Jeff Walker. Bunch of folks recorded the song, "Cowboys Lament", but I like Walker's version best.

Your right, William. Alot of overlooked talent in Texas. Sure could use some of them on the radio today.

I'm not Willie's biggest fan, but that guy sure has written some great songs over the years.

saddlebum, those are great examples. it's just the style that those artists used to express themselves. and some current artists are not any worse in their expressions than the oldies. conway sang about lust most of the time. g jones was a notorious tomcat. look at tammy's songs. drinkin songs, cheatin songs, no moral high ground there. i love country music, been listening to it from the crib.

I just went through the 33 1/3 records i got from my mother. Most of the singers listed are in there. Even found one by old Roy Acuff. He did some good songs too. Still can't believe the price tags on them. Most of them are from a store that has been out of business for 30 years.

Your right about the content and message of alot of counrty music. I chose to give up that lifestyle a long time ago and not think about it any more. So listening to some of the old songs is not as easy on the ears as it used to be. That's where Bob Wills and some others shine pretty good.
There's still nothing like steel guitars and fiddles though to make me perk up and listen.
If a person looks around you can find some radio stations that play the kind of music we like. Some good online streaming radio can be found. Don't know if anyone would like this one, but you can try it and see. It's a wide variety of styles including just about everyone you can think of. If you listen long enough. Lots of western swing, 60s, 70s, 80s, bluegrass. Never know what you might hear next!

saddlebum, we have a radio station i can usually get here that plays old time gospel and the include some of those old artists in the playlist. they also play some bluegrass stuff and they try to run some local smalltime artists. i know how you feel. i like the old honky tonk stuff but i can't take a constant diet of it anymore. and by having spent thousands of hours with my kids i have had some exposure to music styles that i otherwise never would have

Howdy! Back in the early 1970's, Dolph Briscoe, Governor of Texas, provided 3 inaguration balls in Austin, TX. I was in college; however, me and a couple of friends got to see Buck Owens and his band. They were really good! Then we went to see Ray Price, and on to see Faron Young. I think I went in the oldest honky tonk / dance hall in Texas / USA in Grene (sp) Texas . Had lunch behind in in an old mill. Neat place .

The Grist Mill---been there a number of times.
Dime Box was an old haunt of mine----that's Dime Box, Texas.
Boys, there was some great music to dance to back in the days and in some of them old Honky Tonks.
Could not run a tab til you were 21.
Apple Springs---all those VFW halls up in the German and Chek communities.
