Some folks like Chet Atkins for producing the Nasville Sound.
In many ways, it cost some flavor and made Nashville bland and commercial.
I don't really care for commercial music---Disco comes to mind.
Willie and a few left Nashville for this reason.
It made and Hurt Glen Clambell---a great guitar picker without many contenders.

If rap is talking to music (I've never listened longer than it takes to turn it off) then it is about 60 years after it was invented.  Ernest Tubb's Talking Blues was from the late 30's.  Hank Williams had about a dozen or more songs that were called "recitation with music" that were released as Luke the Drifter.  Because of their religeous and moral content, they wouldn't let him release them as Hank.  Talk about tearjerkers.

I occasionally listen to country.  Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, etc.  More of a rock fan though.  Really big fan of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I do listen to rap too though.  I think a lot of people that don't like it have never really sat down and listened to good rap - they have have some preconceived notions of what it is and have heard it on a few loud neighborhood stereos and then make up their mind.  

I even listen to a lot of instrumental movie soundtracks and such.  About the only genres of music that I straight up WILL NOT listen to are jazz and "the blues".  

BTW there IS at least one country rapper.  Lookup "Colt Ford".  He's actually quite good.

We all have ears and can discern the difference between what we like and don't like. Rap is just a really bad sound with some trash lyrics mixed in sung by some nasty gangsters or gangster loving thugs. Its roots are in the ghetto and it's fame rises from an overwhelming recurring theme of trash lyrics. Is it possible to clean it up and some may done so, I suppose. But it’s hard to remove the foundation and its image from the style.

  Sam Cooke and the Kingston trio did Mariah. Plus a lot of others. Seems like the original artist was a woman  Any chance it could have been Miriah Carey?  I know she did it but not sure if she was the original.

Rather poke myself in the eye than listen to rap of any kind!  


Oh wait! There is one rap song I like. One time on the Rosanne TV show her husband, Dan, and some of his friends were hanging out in the kitchen. Using pots and pans and stuff for instruments they did a rap version of, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett".

  We seem to like alot of the same songs Powderman. Spirithawk is right. Wanda Jackson first recorded it in 1954. I had an old record of Silver threads and golden needles. Played it so much i wore it out. I have a cd with Janis Joplin singing it. She does a pretty decent job.

This is a list of the top 20 Country Songs of all time. I tend to agree on the first three.  I think a couple others like, Old Dogs, Children and Watermellon Wine should be higher on the list. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry has always been a favorite of mine. Once heard Mark Chestnut sing it at a concert without any music nor back up. Gave everyone goosebumps. It was awesome but Hank still rules!

HEH. We used to have that on a record. My Dad would slip the record player under my bed while I was asleep, turn the volume wide open and let it play. Nothing like being woke up by a bunch of ol hounds.
Anne Murray has a beautiful voice too. My neighbor had her music played at her husbands funeral, I'd never heard her sing Gospel before. Beautiful voice, but I've always loved REAL gospel music, don't like any of that so called modern yuppy stuff. POWDERMAN.

i know that rap is not a favorite here but did you ever stop to realize that rap style music had astart in country music? look at "hot rod lincoln" in the late 60's or early 70's. or think about red sovine and hits like "giddy up go daddy" or that "phantom 409" i think it was called. other trucker song artists used that style. sort of a talk/sing style with rhyming lines in verse. convoy songs come to mind and the latest ones i can think of that are somewhat the same are like the one where buddy catches a ride to music row with the ghost of hank williams. corb lund does use spoken word within song a fair bit. similarities to think about. every generation trys to find some new ground

I saw Kitty Wells and Grandapa Jones about 50 years ago. She sure did do some good songs.
  I went to see Marty Robbins, Hank Snow and Charlie Pride. Marty was the only real entertainer of the three. The other two never said a word. They just sang and left when they were done. Marty carried on a conversation with the people in the audience. He told the girl in the front row he was positive she was the one he saw looking in his trailer window trying to catch him getting dressed. She finally told him why don't you shut up and give me a big kiss. He walked off stage and planted a big kiss on her. He got back on stage with a big smile and said darn i better not do that again. Think i will do a little singing now.
