What lube do you use for your semi-22's
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:40:08 AM »
I just got a Buck Mark Camper and was wondering what lube I should use for it.  Since I bought my AR I've been using CLP for all of my semi-auto action's.  Althought when I went turkey hunting this fall my SBE-II seemed pretty slow with the action in 15 deg weather... Although any gun oil would likely respond the same...

I don't care for any of the new "Wonder Lubes".........That said, I've been using Marvel Mystery Oil for the last 30 years, with NO need for anything else.........Not a lot is needed either, so I dispense it from a small bottle with an eye dropper.

I use a very light coating of DRY teflon lube. I ensure that it does not have any oil in the formulation. This stuff goes on wet but the solvent carrier evaporates leaving the teflon. I only use it in areas where severe wear occurs.

When I was still doing L.E. the guys started using Break Free to clean their semi pistols. It is a carbon solvent in a spray can. It comes with the little tube nozzle so you can get in all the little crooks and crannies. I started using it on my 10-22s. It's almost impossible to get it all off the gun when you are finished, but it is an oily film so you just leave what you can't wipe off there and it oils the gun.

Remington Dri Lube. There are some other dry lubes on the market and the Remington stuff is probably one of those. Anyway there is no oil to combine with the powder residue and create gunk. Good stuff.

Break Free CLP in temps above 32F.  Below, I use a dry moly product put out by Dow-Corning for the aviation industry.  It goes on wet but the carrier evaporates.  I use the stuff sparingly and have actually been using the same can since 1976 when my dad got it from the manufacturer's rep.  I don't know what I'll use when I run out of this stuff.

1+ on the dry moly.  Mine was designed for bike cables and has a very thin carrier solvent that dries fast.

I started using Mobile One 5-30 Synthetic Motor Oil for my guns a few years ago. If it doesn't burn and gum up in a car, it shouldn't do it in my guns. So far, everything is working fine.

I don't know about synthetics, but motor oils in general are not recommended for guns because the aren't very good at rust prevention.

Tetra Lube, or now they have Tetra Gun. It's a great treatment for the barrel and all of the moving parts as well.

FP-10 (light, synthetic) keeps my Mark II and 10/22 running in the winter.

ATF (automatic transmission fluid) mixed 1/3 to 2/3 odorless mineral spirits (paint thinner); also works great as a bore cleaner for everything short of removing copper deposits.
This is just a simplified version of the very well regarded 'Ed's Red'.
The ATF has lots of anti-oxidents and when thinned out gets in well and once the carrier has evaporated off it leaves a strong, thin layer of lube/protectorant.
If its that cold out Im not, so I cant tell you how it works in extreme cold. I think if I had to be there it would be with a clean and dry piece (not that many rounds to be fired) or a dry lube.

Tetra Gun or just old fashioned 3-in-1 oil.

Kroil mixed 1 to 3 with ATF.  My own brand of Ed's Red.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

CorrosionX  And by the way WD-40 isn't a lubricant.  WD is "water displacer" & the 40 is for the 40th formulation.  Ric
