LOST THE ONLY IGNITION KEY
« on: December 16, 2010, 03:02:49 PM »
this fall I bought my first 4x4 atv a 98 Honda Forman, in as good a shape a Alaskan coastal honda can be......rusty on all steel parts...thats a different tale for a different day.
My daughter reported she had misplaced the ignition key, I wanted to do some trailer work with the Forman and now the job was coming up to help sombody move and couldent use it.
Thinking how thieves try to hotwire the ignition switches (they break them open) I figured on a different path, as Ive replaced bad switches before I knew the location to the cannon plug was up front under the fender in the steering column gastank area, following the wires from ignition switch down to the plug, slide the cannon plug forward off its peg its secured to the chassis and then you can disconect the cannon plug, the Forman ignition circuit has to have a completed circuit to work, the switch opens the circuit, the chassis end of the cannonplug has all male spade connecters (4ea) 2 for battery and 2 for ignition, I fashoned a short horseshoe shaped jumper wire with female spade connecters reach in there and jumper the ignition circuit spades then you have a running Honda ATV (NO BATTERY POWERD LIGHTS & STARTER) use the handle bar kill switch by the starter button to stop the engine, on my older Forman has a Pull starter so starting is not a problem (ALSO has Primer kit on Carb)
this wont make the battery supplied stuff work like headlights and starter but will get you home.
found the key 2 days later, was able to pull off the jumper and reconnect the cannonplug and return to running order, I put the jumper in the back tool storage compartment incase needed in future.
checked at hardware store they were out the key blank needed to make spare. need to wate a month.

Good work!!

I was going to tell you what you already know...  The ignition of a quad is not a complicated thing.. I mean thieves hot wire cars all the time and the quad is WAY WAY simpler!!  The key is just to keep honest people honest!  ::) ;D  One of the first things I did on my machines is make copies. I keep one for each machine on there own rings but together on a fast clip. I also keep a second set of keys on a strap, hidden in the vehicle or trailer. Then a third set locked with other important keys back at home, in the safe. I LIKE redundancy for such things...  ::) Glad you figured it out!!

Merry Christmas!!

A word of warning on the subject of hot wiring a quad.  Since 2002 most quads have come equipped with a diode or voltage splitter either in the ignition switch itself or someplace in the wiring harness.  If you try to hot wire these in many cases you will destroy the cdi module and/or other electronics unless done correctly and with the right equipment.  As an example,  a 3A diode from radio shack will get the job done on some if you know how but if not it can get very expensive real quick.  In some cases it is cheaper to buy another cylinder and key.

;) Checked last friday the local hardware store finnally got a new bag of Honda keyblanks in (correct for my machine) so for $8.95 for the blank and another $2.50 they cut a new key for my machine, only have the one spare now.
Some the things a guy goes through when not attached to a highway system.

Seen where guys cut the wires off the back the ignition switch, they short two together, they useally dont know which to touch so they zap the little 7 amp spade fuse to the battery relay to find that mini size auto fuze ya look under the seat on a honda, they will have ignition but no electric, seen guys add a wire jumper and toggle switch so they have a battery master switch in stead of the ignition/battery switch.
...cant wate till the day comes when they have a coded key on All ATV's like the newer Ski-Do sno-gos now have, bust or lose one then your really out of business, crutial to have the key, without it the computer is not working for ya, no amount of hotwireing can bypass.

I to am a believer in Murphys law, so I have spare keys to everything. Makes life much simplier. Rex I know about being off the road system though, I am too. So I get them when I can.
I just got home from 2 months medical in Anchorage & could not find the key for my truck. Luckly I had a spare stashed away.

Lucky your truck wasnt one that needs the special programed key, have 3 keys for 2000 ford ranger, 2 oem and one from the key shop, one oem key is so worn will hardly work in lock , the new key unlocks stuff  and  unlocks the ignition to release steering wheel but isant programmed so will never start truck.
New Ski-Doo snowmobiles require a programed key to activate the ignition computer.

Found a picture of the jumper, I used liquid electric tape on the terminal ends
