Serial number info
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:18:36 AM »
I couldn't find anything in FAQ regarding serial numbers. I recently purchased a Harrington & Richardson Folding model shotgun in 16-gauge and would like to find out when this shotgun was made. All I can find out is that the Folding models were made from 1908 until 1942. The bluing is still great and the wood is a very nice walnut. The serial number is F21081 on both the barrel and receiver.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie , aka-kayaker63

The FAQs has a list of serial number prefixes, use the Ctrl f search as directed at the top of the page, keyword mfr year, F = 1945.

Tim,

Thanks for you help. Noticed on the prefixes listed that they only go back to 1940. According to Blue Book the Folding models were made between 1908 & 1942. Weren't NEF & H&R firearms manufactured prior 1940?

Thanks,
Charlie

I'm moving this to the H&R Misc forum so one of the H&R Inc experts can give you an accurate answer.  ;)

The H&R Folding Model (large frame, heavy weight, 12, 16, 20 ga and .410 bore) was in production from 1928 to 1942 in two variations (1928-30 and 1931 - 42).  The 'F' prefix to the serial number for this piece merely indicates "FOLDING MODEL" and that it was made prior to 1940.  We don't have much info/data on number of pieces produced, so the serial number to year of manufacture would only be a guess and not very accurate.  Pieces manufactured after 1940 will have the date code letter prefix followed by a large 'F', then the numerals.
There was also, a LIGHTWEIGHT Folding Model in 28 ga or .410 bore, made from 1925 to 1942, in two recognized variations (1925-30  and  1931-42.)
