I never understood why he gets a pass on the pronunciation of his name. Pronouncing it as it's spelled, I would pronounce it "boner", or by extravagant stretching maybe "bonner"; or maybe "benner" if we are using the oe dipthong. But "bayner"? Where did that come from? That's like the old George Carlin skit where the name is spelled "Gymnopsky", but it's pronounced "smith" because it has a lot of silent and accented letters.

The Speaker-elect has not gotten a pass on this issue; in fact, he has been lampooned by such liberal stalwarts as Leslie Stahl and the women from "The View", although the latter seems to have hardly any influence (Barbara Walters notwithstanding).   Where have you been the last week?   I hope you have not been shipwrecked on a remote island in the Obama archipelago?  :o

Simple - it is a German surname.   The German language pronounces  "oeh" as an English language "long a".     The family retained the German pronunciation in using their name.

That seems like an even bigger stretch in pronunciation. My native language is German and the best I can come up with using plausible German re-spellings of the name are "berner", "bewner" and "benner". Maybe its an old or regional dialect, or somebody who doesn't want to be called boner. Most families would have changed the spelling. F'rinsnance there were a lot more Hitler, Goebel, and Himmler families before the 1940s than there are today. Those names got changed in a New York minute after the war.

Faced with the horrific mess that Pilosi and her followers have made of the House, I'd be shedding a few tears too, if I had the resposibility of cleaning it up.

Why did the lefties think ole Slick Willie was so endearing when he faked a tear, or two?  At least it looks like Mr. Boehner is actually feeling the emotions.  I'll take that as opposed to a cold calculating commie (Pilosi, Obwana, Reid, et al)--any day.

I'll second that.

BTW "oe" is a substitue spelling of the German "Umlaut" O which has its own distinctive pronouncation. Because the English keyboards do not have the single symbol for that letter, "oe" is used to denote it.

 The "h" that follows, stretches that sound. If you speak German, either as a native or learned you ought to know that and how it is pronounced.!

Libs can't find anything to fault him with yet so they attack the pronunciation of his name. Can you say "LOOSERS"? And as for John showing his emotions, I see it as his sincere love for this country. We need more just like him. We already have plenty of people in office that hate our country. Our foreign born president said himself, "We live in the greatest country on earth, join with me as we try to change it".

in German, when two vowels go walking the second does the talking.  My college German professor told us that to help with pronunciation.  She would know -- she grew up in the Ruhr valley near Essen after the war.

I'm looking forward to pronouncing Boehner, I had trouble referring to whats-her-name with anything but a derogatory term anyway. Box up her crap from that office and set it in the hallway.

In both songs the "oeh" is pronouced properly without any local dialect veriation.
