Painting a shotgun
« on: December 19, 2010, 02:37:29 AM »
I have a Mosberg 5500 mkII that I'm considering painting. It has a berch stock and isn't worth much so I'm not afraid of ruining it's value. It has been very reliable and fits me well. It has a aluminium alloy reciever making it much lighter than my Beretta, that means a lot since I hunt refuges and must walk a couple miles to get to a good pond. Ducks see in color and a blue barrel sticks out.  I figures I may as well paint it with camo paint.  I plan on degreasing it, buffing it with 0000 steel wool on both the metal and stock. I figured using primer first would be the best idea then a couple coats of tan camo paint. I also tought if I could fiind some toulies to shoot through dark green camo paint would add some contrast to the tan base color. Have you done this before or have some tips on this proces.  Is there one paint better than another?

First off make sure you want to paint it. The paint will be a pain to remove. ;) I have painted a few of my guns. I am attached to them and they will not be leaving me for a long time.

Paint wise. If you want a good primer go to auto parts store and get the self etching primer it digs in. Plus it is a light olive green so it can become part of your camo.  For the black, I like the Rustoleum BBQ.  Fusion also make a very good paint(wallyworld) Somthing you may think about is getting it parkerized. Not real expensive and last a long time.

Oh and one more thing. Be prepared to get fussed at. Many folks are purest and do not like people painting guns ;D

Make sure to post up your picts.
If you thumb around the archives or check in the FAQ of the H&R NEF rifle forum. There picts of some. Beware of stimpylu32's advice he likes florecent guns ;D

I was of a mind, to obtain a more professional look to the finished gun - so I paid the $80 to www.bellandcarlson.com  , to apply one of their several different "Special Effects" camo  dips.

I had the gun back in 3 weeks, and it looked like it came from the factory camo'd.  A plus, was that the B&C finish wore like iron.

They want $200 for the entire gun.  That's a lot more than I want to spend on this ol Mossy.  Next year I hope to have a new shotgun but the Ol Mossy will remain my back up. That's why the paint. I don't care what other people like I just want a gun that won't stick out in the marsh.
