460 S&W question
« on: December 19, 2010, 01:28:00 PM »
I have a 454 cassull rechambered to 460 S&W with a brake instaled. The gunsmith that reamed the chamber also drilled two additional scope base holes and included an aluminum weaver base with it. His logic in recomending an aluminum base is that it's lighter and won't shear off the screws (plus it has two additionl screws) with the heavy recoil. Does this make sence to anyone else and if so should I use light weight aluminum rings or steel ones?
  Thanks, Mike

Two extra screws is a good idea.  For scope bases/rings, I'd recommend SSK Industries' T'SOB base/rings with 4 rings.

As for aluminum not shearing off screws, etc., that's a bunch of baloney.  Neither aluminum nor steel rings will shear off the screws.  A fair number of types of aluminum bases won't hold up to 460 S&W Magnum recoil.  Also, be sure to use low or medium strength Lock Tite when you attach the base; you don't need to use it on the rings.

The vaunted T' SOB base and rings are of aluminum as well, and I was told by J D Jones, himself that it was for the very same reason as your gunsmith :o.  Mine have worked flawlessly for me for many years, BUT, so has a much heavier, solid steel Redfield 3-Ring mounted w/ only 4 screws that rode atop a 45-70. ??? However, that Redfield only carried a small, light Leupold M8 2X scope too ::).

I have a Redfield steel three ring base that I'll probably use.  I'll look into getting two additional holes drilled just to be safe.

I have a T/C Encore factory 454 Casull barrel that was once 15” and has been cut down to 12”, re-crowned, and had a T’SOB base and three rings all accomplished by SSK Industries. My barrel wears a T/C illuminated reticle 2.5-7x28mm scope.  This is one handy scoped pistol with excellent accuracy and awesome power.

Yes I highly recommend SSKindustries.com, they are the absolute best in the business.
