1st coyote of the season
« on: December 20, 2010, 01:04:36 AM »
Got my 1st coyote of the season yesterday. My friend John and I went out at first light to a place that was productive last year. We got set up on a large field that is seperatred by a ditch in the middle and is surrounded by woods on three sides. We set up at the end of the ditch at the edge of the woods and each of us watched a field, mine to my right his to his left. He started the Foxpro with rodent in distress for about ten minutes, but nothing showed. Then he switched to a cottontail in distress and right away I saw a coyote running thru the field on my right and another one coming in behind it. I let the first one go by so that John might see it but it spooked about 40 yards from the caller and turned and ran back the way it came passing the second one on the way. the second one stood there facing me but looking at the call so I put a 62 gr hollow point .223 right in the front of it's chest between the front legs at about 75 yards. It did a few circles and started running right at me and I was ready to shoot again he he nose dived into the ground. When I looke at the one running away I saw another one that had held back but I couldn't get a shot because of the brush. Next time we will pay a little more attention to how we set up. If we would have been closer together and closer to the edge of the field we might have got another one or two.
I was going to skin this guy but he stunk sooo bad I couldn't do it. The bullet went all the way thru and literaly blew the crap out of him. I used a new Savage Edge in .223 with a Redfield 4x12x40 scope and was shooting Golden Bear 62 gr HP.

Congrats. Good story. You'll probably learn something every time you hunt the Hunters. They hunt nonstop and have to be good at it. Hunger/survival is their motivation so you have an advantage.

How do you like that Redfield scope. Which reticle? What setting were you on at the 75yd shot? Would you buy it again?

I have the 4x12x40 with accurange reticle and I love it. I keep it set on 5-6 power when calling because most of the time the coyotes are moving toward you or the caller and it is easier to pick them up at the lower power. I shot this one at 75 yards or so and I loved the way the circle reticle picked him up for a quick shot. I have shot this combo on the bench out to 200 yards and I managed 2" groups with the cheap Golden Bear hp ammo so I just stuck with it. The Hornady 55 gr Vmax is right with it tho but shoots lower at the longer range. I would defineatly buy this scope again and in fact am thinking about getting a 3x9x40 for my next scope when the need arises.

if you didn't skin it what did you end up doing with it?  IT looked to be a good well furred hide.

If you can't get over the stink of them you will never skin one out, they all stink.  ::)

It's not that bad once you get used to it, but I will give on one little tidbit, skin them warm, it makes it a lot easier...

if you use a 50 bmg it would aid in fur removal  or at least start the process for you ;D ;D
