optic recommendation for Marlin 44mag 94
« on: December 20, 2010, 10:56:50 AM »
Howdy,

I just got my 2nd Marlin deer rifle.  It is a SS 44 mag 94.  I want to put a scope on it and would apprecieate a reccomendaton.

My first Marlin 94 is in 41 mag and wears a Bushnell 3200 2x7 and I like it but want to consider other ideas...I was thinking a little smaller power maybe 1.5 x 5 or similar.

What brand scope and size would be ideal.   I hunt in the Indiana woods for whitetail and the occasional coyote.

Thaanks, in advance.

my new Marlin 1984 44Mag wears a Simmons 3-9x32 8 Point.
It seems to be accurate enough and has held up so far. I
would rather be young enough to use open sights but if I
want to keep shooting, scopes are a must. You will love the
new 44! Enjoy!

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

I have ordered a Bushnell 1.5-4.5x32 Elite 3200 Rifle Scope.  It has a firefly reticle.

It is on order from SWFA Optics, I under stand it is discontinued from Bushnell.

Does anybody have experience with the firefly reticle

I like the Firefly.  Helps late, especially when woods hunting.  Also I like that it doesn't overpower the target like some red dots I've used.  Ain't much fun when all you can see is the dot and not the deer or whatever.

Just got a Redfield Revolution 2-7x 33mm.  It appears to be a real snazzy scope by a classic maker (the company is owned by Leupold, but the scopes are made here in the USA...Oregon I think.)  I have always been a fan of 2-7x range scopes.  Since New England terrain and woods are not conducive to long shooting high power magnification is really not needed.  So I keep it on 2x for the close range work and I can easily jet up to 7x for 100 yard shots nice and easy.  I also have a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x, and I too love it.  But like you, when I saw this new Redfield I decided to try something new.  While I don't have ot on the rifle yet I can tell so far I will like it as much as the Bushnell (oh yeah, and the price was cheaper than th BUshnell, so that is a bonus!)

You generally bet the most scope for the $$$ ( in variable scopes ) with something like a 3 x 9 x 40 .  As far as brand , have you been happy with the Bushnell 3200 ?  If so get another .

I , personally have been buying Loupys .  But I have a used Burris Fullfield II I bought off of EBay , that I like too .  But have read some of the newer Burris scopes are made in the Phillipeans (sp) ?

God bless

I can take the heat.  Removed the Leo 2 X 7 and installed a Bushnell Trophy red dot.  Every shot will be under 125 yards in my hunting area.  Over the last three Indiana seasons have taken three, one shot deer.  Where the red dot is thats where the bullet will hit.  Always has a five shot group under three inches.  These groups are with Fusion JHP that are .429 cal.  Have had a 1 1/2 inch group with my friends reloads with cast lead Rem. in .430 cal.  Run about 25 - 30 rounds a season just to here BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

+1 on the 2-7 Prostaff. They are great scopes! Perfect for the 1894.

At the ranges you will be shooting, nothing wrong with a straight 2.5 power scope with 20 mm objective.  I like the straight tubes on my levers, looks better TO ME than scopes with larger bells.  I have several K-2.5's, Nikon 1.5-4.5X20, and Leupold VXIII's 1.5-5X20.  Even the K 2.5's are clear enough during shooting hours here in Montana.  DP

I second the Redfield Revolution 2-7x 33mm! It is a great scope and made in the USA to boot!

Wow, that is different. How that work at say 100 yards? I use a Leupold 2-7x32 shotgun scope on mine with a heavy redical. You can the find crosshairs fast in the woods.
