Cleaning the Encore Barrels

I have a problem with my stainless encore barrels that is causing me some concern. First off, after hunting in wet or snowy conditions, rust appears in the breach area of the barrels. This has happened to both my 209x50 and 30.06 Fox Ridge Barrels, both stainless finish. The rust congregates around the lug hanging off the barrel. In addition, the spring loaded piece which slides in and out of the barrel below the chamber when opening and closing the action is especially hard hit. I cannot remove this piece for cleaing, so I'm stuck. I clean my rifles well, and I use Rem Oil, etc. The spring loaded piece appears to be split in the center and may be a locking lug?? It appears to be pinned into the barrel?? Help. I hate rust!!! I just don't know how to get at this point on my barrels-do you remove the pin?? / locking lug from the barrel, then clean and replace, etc.?? Thanks. Pete

Pete, yes that is the locking lug. While I've never had one rust. It should be possible to remove the little roll pin that hold's it in place. Just make sure to take the spring pressure off the pin before you punch it out by pressing in the lug with your thumb and don't let the spring fly away when you let off. Furthermore that locking lug is hardened steel and is put under great forces under firing. So it might be wise to avoid using abrasives which could scratch the surface and create strees risers.
